Kajal Dhochak Becomes First Indian Heavyweight Medallist at World Wrestling Championships

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kajal Dhochak, at just 18 years old, has already made a significant mark in the world of wrestling. Recently, she became the first Indian heavyweight medallist at the World Wrestling Championships, securing a silver in the women’s 76kg category. This achievement occurred during her debut at the senior level, highlighting her rapid ascent in the sport.

Her coach, Virender Dahiya, draws a parallel between Kajal’s determination and that of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted for India at 16 due to his relentless hunger for improvement. Dahiya believes Kajal possesses a similar drive, which is evident in her training and competition.

Kajal’s ambition extends beyond her recent success, as she has set her sights on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. This goal is prominently displayed on her WhatsApp profile, serving as a constant reminder of her aspirations. Her coach, Ajay Malik, emphasises that her focus remains firmly on the Olympics, influencing her daily training regimen.

Rapid Progression in Wrestling

Kajal’s journey in wrestling began at a young age, influenced by her elder brother, who trained under their uncle, Krishan Dhochak, a former international wrestler. After years of training in her village in Sonipat district, Haryana, she joined the Kuldeep Malik Academy at 14, where her skills flourished.

Her record is impressive, having won the U17 world title in 2024, followed by consecutive U20 world titles in 2025 and 2026. This swift rise has led to expectations of gold medals even before she fully transitions to senior-level competition. Dahiya noted that the Indian camp had hoped for her to clinch gold at her first senior World Championships, reflecting the high regard in which she is held.

During the senior World Championships, Kajal showcased her resilience by overcoming a 1-7 deficit in the semifinals against Kyrgyzstan’s Aiperi Medet Kyzy, ultimately winning 10-7. Although she lost in the final to Ukraine’s Anastasiya Alpyeyeva, her performance demonstrated that her junior accolades were not merely a result of competing against younger opponents.

Future Challenges and Development

Kajal’s journey is marked by her confidence and aggressive style, which have contributed to her rapid success. Her coach, Ajay Malik, highlights her fearlessness, stating that she approaches every opponent with the same determination, regardless of their experience. However, he also acknowledges the need for her to refine her defensive skills as she transitions into senior competition.

While her aggressive approach is a significant asset, Dahiya cautions that it could become a liability if not managed effectively. As Kajal progresses, balancing her attacking instincts with defensive strategies will be crucial in her quest for a world title.

Outside the mat, Kajal maintains a disciplined lifestyle, supported by her family. Her father works as a driver, and her mother is a homemaker who actively participates in her training and competitions. Kajal is also pursuing a BA degree, balancing her academic responsibilities with her athletic commitments.

Despite her achievements, Kajal remains humble and open to feedback, as described by her coach. She approaches her training with a positive attitude, eager to learn and improve. The silver medal she earned at the World Championships serves as both a recognition of her talent and a stepping stone towards her ultimate goal of Olympic glory.
