India Aims for 4-0 Lead Against New Zealand in Fourth T20I

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has the chance to secure a 4-0 lead in the T20I series against New Zealand with the fourth match scheduled for Friday. With the series already clinched, the Indian team may consider providing valuable playing time to spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy. Both players have not featured prominently in recent matches, as the team management has favoured a batting-heavy line-up that extends to No. 8.

Given the high-scoring nature of the previous contests, this strategy has proven effective for the visitors, who currently hold a commanding 3-0 advantage. However, with the remaining matches lacking significant stakes, India might opt to experiment with their team composition.

Kuldeep Yadav, a left-arm wrist-spinner, has been sidelined for the initial three matches against New Zealand, despite having showcased his skills in the home series against the West Indies. His absence from the playing XI raises concerns about maintaining his confidence, particularly as accommodating him could necessitate a reduction in the batting line-up.

Bowling Performance and Team Composition

The spin-bowling all-rounders who participated in the third T20I, Axar Patel and Naman Dhir, did not get the opportunity to bowl. Axar has a career economy rate of 7.70 in 115 T20Is but has struggled in this series, conceding an average of 9.58 runs per over with only two wickets to his name.

In the pace department, veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar has shown glimpses of his former self, particularly in the death overs of the last match in Wellington, where he consistently delivered yorkers. Nevertheless, he has been expensive overall, having conceded 139 runs from 72 deliveries across the first three matches. As he plays his first international series in four years, Bhuvneshwar will be keen to improve his statistics.

In the previous matches, Prince Yadav was selected over Mayank Yadav, and it remains uncertain whether Mayank will return for this match. The team management may continue with the impressive Prince Yadav. Additionally, there is still uncertainty surrounding Ishan Kishan’s availability due to a groin injury, which could lead to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi receiving another chance to demonstrate his explosive batting.

Challenges for New Zealand’s Bowling Attack

New Zealand’s primary challenge has been managing India’s formidable top order. Players such as Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi have consistently delivered explosive performances, putting immense pressure on the home bowlers. India’s batting prowess was particularly evident in Wellington, where they scored a record 118 runs during the powerplay.

Captain Mitchell Santner has excelled with his left-arm spin, yet he has received limited assistance from the rest of New Zealand’s bowling attack. India’s left-handed batsmen also managed to dominate off-spinner Michael Bracewell in Wellington, adding to the concerns for the New Zealand team.

As the series progresses, Santner will be hoping to win the toss for the first time. Given the prevailing conditions, bowling first has been the preferred strategy. New Zealand has also faced setbacks, with Lockie Ferguson ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a calf injury, necessitating a reassessment of their bowling plans.
