Toyota Develops New 1.5-Litre Hybrid Powertrain, Targets 15% Better Fuel Economy

The CSR Journal Magazine

Toyota is in the process of developing a new 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain aimed at enhancing fuel economy by over 15 per cent compared to its existing systems. This innovative powertrain integrates a family of four-cylinder petrol engines with compact electric motors and advanced power electronics. The design includes both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions, showcasing a significant step forward in hybrid technology.

The new hybrid system has been crafted from the ground up specifically for electrification, rather than modifying an existing internal combustion engine. This fresh approach is intended to facilitate the integration of hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains into vehicle platforms that were originally designed for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), ensuring that cabin space, vehicle proportions, and overall capability remain uncompromised.

Performance and Efficiency Improvements

The naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine is being developed to replace the performance range currently served by Toyota’s 1.8-litre engine and its existing 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit. The turbocharged variant is expected to broaden the applications of this engine family, providing greater versatility in vehicle performance.

Toyota aims to achieve fuel economy improvements through a combination of factors, including reduced mechanical friction, enhanced thermal management, lower electrical losses, and decreased aerodynamic drag. Additionally, the system will incorporate lighter and more compact electric motors and power control units.

Toyota’s utilisation of silicon carbide (SiC) power electronics is anticipated to further enhance overall efficiency. These advancements are part of Toyota’s commitment to developing a hybrid system that is not only efficient but also adaptable to various driving conditions and consumer preferences.

The new powertrain is designed to underpin a multi-pathway platform that will accommodate various electrified technologies. This strategy allows for the production of battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and conventional hybrids on a shared vehicle platform, optimising development and manufacturing investments across a diverse range of vehicles.

Strategic Vision for Electrification

Toyota’s multi-pathway strategy aims to provide different electrified technologies tailored to regional energy conditions, infrastructure, and customer preferences. By adopting a common vehicle platform, Toyota intends to maximise economies of scale without sacrificing the performance or capabilities of individual powertrain variants. This approach is expected to enhance flexibility in design, enabling lower bonnet heights and more dynamic vehicle proportions, while maintaining the packaging advantages of platforms initially developed for electric vehicles.

Furthermore, Toyota plans to leverage this common architecture to enhance manufacturing flexibility, allowing production facilities to adjust the mix of BEVs, plug-in hybrids, and hybrids in response to evolving customer demand. This adaptability is crucial as the automotive market continues to shift towards more sustainable options.

In addition to its hybrid technology, Toyota remains committed to achieving carbon neutrality through various means, including battery electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles. The company is also working on ensuring that its new engine and hybrid system can utilise renewable and carbon-neutral fuels, aligning with global sustainability goals.

Future Developments and Market Strategy

Toyota plans to expand the external sales of its new engine and hybrid technologies in the coming years, although specific timelines for production or the first models to utilise this system have not been disclosed. Detailed performance metrics and output figures remain under wraps as well. This development underscores Toyota’s ongoing focus on enhancing the efficiency of combustion-based powertrains while simultaneously broadening its electrified vehicle portfolio.

The introduction of the new 1.5-litre hybrid powertrain signifies Toyota’s commitment to innovation in the automotive sector. With a common platform designed to accommodate various technologies, the company is poised to adapt to changing market requirements and consumer preferences, ensuring its relevance in an increasingly electrified future.
