Magnitude 5.1 Earthquake Strikes Near Andaman and Nicobar Islands

The CSR Journal Magazine

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred on Thursday, 29 October 2026, approximately 218 km north-northwest of Bamboo Flat in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km, with its epicentre pinpointed at latitude 9.03° north and longitude 92.78° east. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the details through a post on X, outlining the earthquake’s magnitude, time, coordinates, and depth.

Currently, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties resulting from this seismic event. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been experiencing increased seismic activity in recent months, prompting concerns among local residents and authorities.

Earlier this year, in February, a magnitude 4.6 earthquake was recorded in the Nicobar Islands, further indicating the region’s vulnerability to seismic events. The NCS continues to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.

Recent Earthquakes Across India

In addition to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands earthquake, the National Centre for Seismology reported a magnitude 3.0 earthquake that struck Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district on Monday morning, 29 October 2026. This tremor occurred at a depth of 5 km, with its epicentre located at latitude 25.602° north and longitude 90.695° east. The earthquake was recorded at 6:38 AM, and the NCS shared the specifics of this event via a post on X.

On Tuesday, two minor earthquakes were reported in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district, both of which did not result in any loss of life or property. The first tremor, measuring 2.3 in magnitude, was detected in Haldgaon village around 3:30 PM, followed by a magnitude 3.0 earthquake near Dawaha village, situated about 26 km from Nagpur city. Both tremors originated from a depth of 8-10 km beneath the surface.

These recent occurrences mark the 15th recorded seismic event in the Nagpur region since the beginning of 2023, with a total of two events reported in 2023 and eleven in 2024. The frequency of these tremors has raised awareness about the seismic risks in the area.

Other Notable Seismic Events

On 18 October 2026, another earthquake measuring three in magnitude struck Kamjong district in Manipur, according to the NCS. This adds to the series of seismic activities that have been noted across various parts of India. Earlier in October, on the 10th, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, occurring at 8:07 PM at a depth of 11 km.

Furthermore, on the same day as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands earthquake, a more substantial seismic event was recorded internationally. A magnitude 5.82 earthquake struck New Guinea in Papua New Guinea at a depth of 10 km, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences. This highlights the ongoing seismic activity occurring globally.

The NCS continues to provide updates regarding seismic activities across India, ensuring that the public remains informed about potential risks and safety measures. Authorities are urged to remain vigilant as the frequency of earthquakes appears to be increasing in various regions.
