Cloudy Skies and Rain May Obscure Moon for Karwa Chauth in Delhi-NCR

The CSR Journal Magazine

The upcoming Karwa Chauth fasting may encounter weather-related obstacles this year, as forecasts indicate the likelihood of cloudy skies and intermittent rain across Delhi-NCR, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and Chandigarh on Thursday. This situation raises concerns regarding the visibility of the Moon during the evening hours, which is crucial for women observing the fast.

According to the latest meteorological updates, varying intensities of rain are expected to persist throughout the day, accompanied by overcast conditions. These clouds could obstruct the view of the Moon, making it difficult for devotees to perform the traditional rituals associated with the festival.

As the day progresses, the weather conditions may pose significant challenges for those participating in the observance, particularly in urban areas where visibility is often affected by atmospheric conditions.

Reasons Behind Cloudy Conditions in Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified a cyclonic circulation over Haryana and adjacent regions of Uttar Pradesh as a key factor contributing to the unsettled weather. This circulation extends up to approximately 0.9 km above mean sea level and is expected to influence local weather patterns significantly.

Additionally, a western disturbance originating from northern Pakistan and its neighbouring areas is further impacting the atmospheric conditions. Another western disturbance over Jammu and surrounding regions has merged with this system, resulting in a broader weather pattern that is likely to maintain cloudy skies and bring rain to parts of northern India.

As a result of these interacting weather systems, maximum temperatures are projected to decrease by 2–4 degrees Celsius over the next two days. Following this period, a slight increase in temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius is anticipated, which may offer some relief from the current conditions.

Moonrise Timing and Visibility Concerns

The Moon is expected to rise at approximately 8:11 pm on October 29, according to astronomical calculations. However, the presence of thick cloud cover may hinder visibility, even after the Moon has risen above the horizon. Currently, the Moon is in its waning gibbous phase, with about 86.6 per cent of its surface illuminated, which typically suggests a bright appearance.

Despite the favourable lunar phase, local weather conditions will ultimately determine whether the Moon can be seen from the ground. The visibility of the Moon is particularly important for women observing the fast, as it marks the conclusion of their day-long fasting ritual.

If the Moon is obscured by clouds, it could complicate the traditional observance of Karwa Chauth. Women typically break their fast after sighting the Moon and performing the associated rituals. In light of the weather forecast, visibility may pose the greatest challenge for devotees in Delhi-NCR and surrounding regions this evening.

Those participating in the fast are advised to stay updated on local weather reports throughout the evening. Additionally, they may wish to consult family traditions or religious guidance should clouds obstruct a direct sighting of the Moon. Currently, the outlook for clear moon viewing across parts of northern India appears unfavourable, although actual visibility will depend on the evolution of local weather conditions.
