Decoys, Secret Jet, and Trump’s Assistance Facilitate Bolsonaro’s Escape to the US

The CSR Journal Magazine

Flávio Bolsonaro’s escape from Brazil to the United States involved a complex operation featuring decoy vehicles, a clandestine transfer through Argentina and Ecuador, and support from allies of former US President Donald Trump. The Brazilian senator and his family arrived in Miami on Wednesday following an operation orchestrated by a select group of US officials and aides to Argentine President Javier Milei, as reported by The Wall Street Journal on Thursday. This departure occurred after Bolsonaro lost the presidential runoff election to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Brazil’s Supreme Court had mandated that he surrender his passports within 24 hours as part of a money-laundering investigation, thereby prohibiting him from leaving the country. Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the allegations against him.

Concealed Departure and Decoy Vehicles

Upon arriving in Miami on Wednesday morning, Bolsonaro was seen wearing a navy polo shirt and carrying a backpack, while uniformed officers used umbrellas to shield him from the media. Reports indicate that he departed from his residence in Brasília on Monday evening in a convoy of four dark vehicles. The convoy split in various directions, creating confusion among journalists and observers regarding which vehicle was transporting him.

By Tuesday afternoon, however, allies were informing reporters that he had already reached Florida, despite still being in Brazil at that time. The operation reportedly took shape on Monday, as concerns grew among Bolsonaro’s associates that he could potentially face arrest due to his ongoing legal troubles, which had intensified following the court order restricting his travel.

Crossing Borders and Private Jet Transfer

Bolsonaro, along with his wife and two daughters, travelled by road towards Argentina. According to Argentine authorities, the family crossed the Tancredo Neves International Bridge into Puerto Iguazú at approximately 10:50 pm local time on Tuesday. Their vehicle was escorted by Argentine airport security police to the immigration checkpoint at Iguazú Falls International Airport.

A former Argentine intelligence official revealed that Santiago Caputo, a senior aide to President Milei, was overseeing the operation and coordinating with Bolsonaro’s younger brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro. A private Gulfstream jet, operated by charter airline Baires Fly, awaited them at the airport. Flight-tracking data indicated that the aircraft made a stop in Guayaquil, Ecuador, to refuel before continuing its journey to the United States.

Bolsonaro reportedly travelled using an Italian passport, having acquired Italian citizenship earlier in 2023. The jet landed at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport on Wednesday morning, where officers shielded the family from cameras as they were escorted to a waiting vehicle.

Trump’s Approval and Future Plans

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump personally approved the family’s entry into the United States on Tuesday, following which Secretary of State Marco Rubio moved to issue visas. The family was granted entry under humanitarian parole, allowing them to remain in the country for one year, according to sources familiar with the arrangements.

Jason Miller, a Trump adviser, played a role in securing the charter flight, collaborating with Eduardo Bolsonaro. This operation culminated years of efforts by the Bolsonaro family to establish ties with Trump and his inner circle. In a statement from Miami, Bolsonaro referred to himself as the “leader of Brazil” and expressed gratitude to Trump for welcoming him to a “land of freedoms.” He also commended Milei for his “courage” and “sense of justice.”

Trump commented on the Bolsonaros, stating that he believed they were treated unfairly, while also noting the peculiar nature of the election. Bolsonaro is reportedly planning to establish a political operation in exile in the United States, although it remains uncertain whether the Trump administration will take any further actions regarding Brazil’s domestic political and legal situations.
