AI Reveals Internet Vulnerabilities in October 2026 Crisis, Boosting Demand for Cybersecurity Professionals

The CSR Journal Magazine

AI is currently revealing vulnerabilities within the internet, highlighting issues that have previously gone unnoticed. October 2026 has been particularly challenging, with significant compromises reported in PHP and eMudhra digital certificates, among others. This period has been termed “Black October” due to the scale and severity of these breaches. The situation has prompted a collective realisation of the fragility of online systems.

As the internet grapples with these challenges, the demand for cybersecurity professionals has surged. The very technology that some critics argue threatens jobs is simultaneously creating new opportunities for specialists skilled in cybersecurity. These professionals are essential for addressing the gaps exposed by AI, ensuring a more secure online environment.

Despite the tough circumstances, there is potential for growth in the cybersecurity sector. The ongoing need for skilled individuals who can navigate these complexities may offer a silver lining amidst the turmoil. However, the question remains as to how many will seize this opportunity in a time of adversity.

Increased Focus on Cybersecurity Roles

In a job market facing significant challenges, those with backgrounds in cybersecurity are finding new avenues for employment. As AI technology identifies bugs at an accelerated pace, the necessity for human intervention to rectify these issues has become more apparent. Experts assert that while AI can detect vulnerabilities, human expertise is crucial for validating results and managing risks.

Kunal Ruvala, General Manager at Palo Alto Networks India, likens the situation to aviation, where pilots remain essential despite advancements in autopilot technology. He emphasises that human oversight is vital for addressing unexpected situations in cybersecurity, underscoring the evolving nature of these roles.

Neelabh Shukla, Chief Business Officer at Careernet, notes that organisations will require additional engineers to address the backlog of vulnerabilities identified by AI. As demand for experienced cybersecurity professionals grows, companies are already taking steps to bolster their teams to manage these challenges effectively.

Future Skills and Training Needs

As the cybersecurity landscape evolves, professionals will need to adapt to new roles that focus on securing AI-driven systems and responding to sophisticated attacks. Neelabh Shukla highlights the necessity for experts who can validate automated fixes and understand the intricacies of risk management in this changing environment.

Kunal Ruvela stresses the importance of specialised training to prepare candidates for future roles in cybersecurity. He points out that while India has a robust engineering talent pool, there is a pressing need to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical skills in cybersecurity. Enhanced collaboration between industry and academia will be essential to meet these training requirements.

To transition successfully into cybersecurity, professionals, particularly software engineers, should focus on developing a strong foundation in areas such as application security and cloud security. Neelabh Shukla emphasises that expertise in secure coding and incident response will be critical for those looking to shift into this field.

According to hiring platform Indeed, there has been notable growth in job postings for cybersecurity roles, with data protection and cybersecurity analyst positions increasing by 18 per cent and 9 per cent respectively over the past year. However, the rise in job seekers, particularly in data protection, has surged by 225 per cent, indicating a competitive landscape for aspiring professionals.

While interest in cybersecurity careers is rising, not all applicants may possess the necessary skills. Mukul Kumar, a cybersecurity expert, notes that the most successful individuals in the field are those who understand systems comprehensively and can communicate risks effectively to non-technical stakeholders. This ability to bridge the gap between technical knowledge and practical application will be crucial for future success in cybersecurity.
