Israeli PM Netanyahu Honors Pilot Smit Machchhar for Averting Flydubai Crisis

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has lauded Indian pilot Smit Machchhar as a “hero of the entire world” following an incident where he thwarted an alleged attempt by his co-pilot to crash their aircraft. The 38-year-old Machchhar is currently receiving medical care in the UAE after being assaulted in the cockpit during the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday.

During a phone call on Saturday, Netanyahu expressed his admiration for Machchhar and extended an invitation for both him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to light a flame on Israeli Independence Day, traditionally one of the highest honours in Israel. This invitation underscores Machchhar’s significant act of bravery that has garnered global attention.

The UAE has initiated an investigation into the incident, reportedly revealing that the co-pilot’s actions were classified as an attempt to carry out a “terrorist act.” As details unfold, the situation is attracting considerable international scrutiny and concern.

Details of the Incident

According to Machchhar, the attack began when the co-pilot requested to pray. While Machchhar was facing forward to respect this request, he suddenly experienced a severe blow to the back of his head. He initially feared that the aircraft had sustained critical damage. However, he quickly realised that he was under attack from his co-pilot instead.

Struggling with blurred vision and disorientation, Machchhar attempted to prevent further harm. He recounted a tense moment where he managed to open the cockpit door momentarily, but the co-pilot shut it again, forcing him to the floor as chaos ensued outside. Describing his determination to survive, Machchhar stated he had one last push in him to regain control of the situation.

Eventually, he succeeded in opening the cockpit door again while injured, allowing other crew members to take control. Their coordinated effort, coupled with Machchhar’s bravery, helped avert a potential disaster. The flight was carrying 174 passengers and had descended rapidly from 34,000 feet, sending distress signals during the emergency.

Ongoing Investigations and Aftermath

The co-pilot, identified as Hamam al-Hammami, is an Omani citizen and had previously been grounded in Oman due to concerns over his ideological beliefs. Reports indicate he used a crash axe, kept in the cockpit for emergencies, to attack Machchhar. The precise motive behind his actions remains unclear as investigations continue.

In the aftermath of the incident, passengers expressed their gratitude for Machchhar’s efforts, stating that they managed to restrain the co-pilot with a headphone cable. Netanyahu recognised their courage and resourcefulness, acknowledging that they too deserved to be honoured for their actions.

Previously, Machchhar had also directly communicated with Prime Minister Modi, sharing the harrowing details of the attack and his resolve to ensure the safety of others. The Indian Embassy in the UAE confirmed that Machchhar is in stable condition and is recovering well.
