Iran Declares Closure of Hormuz Strait While US Maintains It Is Open

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran has announced that the Strait of Hormuz is closed to shipping, attributing this action to what it calls the “illegal movements” of United States military forces in the Gulf region. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority, a body established by Tehran in May with the aim of overseeing maritime activities in this strategic area, stated that vessels would not be allowed passage due to US military operations. In a statement posted on X, the agency indicated that navigation would resume once stability is restored and all requests will be considered for necessary permits.

This announcement follows a series of Iranian missile and drone strikes targeting facilities linked to US interests in Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar, allegedly in retaliation for US attacks. The increasing tensions in the region have raised concerns among shipping companies monitoring the safety of their routes.

US Response to Iran’s Declaration

The United States has categorically denied Iran’s assertions about the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, asserting that the vital maritime corridor remains open. The US Central Command confirmed that commercial shipping continues to traverse the waterway, despite Iran’s threats. In a statement shared on X, the US military emphasised its readiness to safeguard navigation rights, dismissing Iran’s claims of control over the waterway.

Commenting on a statement made by an Iranian naval commander regarding the monitoring of foreign vessels, the US military responded by reiterating that the Strait of Hormuz is an international passageway. They affirmed their commitment to ensuring free navigation through the strait, highlighting the continued flow of maritime traffic.

US President Donald Trump also attempted to allay market concerns regarding the security of commercial shipping in the Gulf. During an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, he affirmed that the Strait of Hormuz remained accessible for lawful transit, countering fears generated by the heightened military engagements in the region.

Iran’s Strategic Position on the Strait

The ongoing dispute over the Strait is occurring against a backdrop of intensified military confrontations between the US and Iran, marked by missile and drone attacks on US-linked locations throughout the region. Following these attacks, incidents of injuries and property damage have been reported, raising the stakes in this already volatile environment.

Australia has voiced its concerns over drone strikes that targeted its maritime interests, while other nations, including Oman and Bahrain, have issued protest statements regarding breaches of their airspace. In response to the escalating situation, the US Embassy in Oman has advised American citizens residing in sensitive areas to observe precautionary measures.

Despite Iran’s attempts to assert control over the Strait, the US Navy continues to maintain that alternative routes for commercial shipping remain available. This includes an expanded southern route near Oman, which is reportedly safe for two-way traffic. The ongoing cycle of military actions has placed additional pressure on global shipping and fuel supply chains, with the Strait of Hormuz being a vital corridor for oil and liquefied natural gas shipments worldwide.
