Investigation Expands in IRS Officer’s Daughter’s Rape and Murder Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman, daughter of an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, has intensified significantly. This tragic event took place in South Delhi’s Kailash Hills and has caused widespread outrage and concern across the national capital. The victim, a graduate of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, was preparing for her first attempt at the civil services exam when the incident occurred.

Reports indicate that the victim led a disciplined life, dedicated to her studies and goals. She had transformed a section of her home terrace into a study area almost two years ago, allowing her to maintain focus while preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination. The meticulous organisation of her study space clearly reflected her commitment and seriousness towards her aspirations.

Delhi Police are now actively pursuing multiple lines of inquiry following recent developments, including the acquisition of forensic evidence and various court proceedings. The investigation has revealed disturbing details about the behaviour of the accused, identified as Rahul Meena, who was arrested shortly after the incident.

Details of the Case and Arrest

On April 23, the police sought a four-day custodial interrogation of Meena, which was granted by Saket Court. Meena was apprehended from a hotel in Dwarka, and authorities indicated that the custodial period is essential for reconstructing the crime’s timeline, verifying digital evidence, and uncovering the full motive behind his actions. He had reportedly evaded capture initially by using a stolen mobile phone and hotel Wi-Fi to hide his location.

According to investigation sources, the accused attempted to avoid detection by not using his own mobile phone. Investigators tracked him through internet records and surveillance footage that established his movements. Meena allegedly contacted a relative in Gurugram via Instagram Messenger while staying at the hotel, which ultimately led to his discovery and arrest.

During interrogation, sources noted that Meena exhibited a troubling lack of remorse for his actions, consistently maintaining a calm exterior. He claimed he entered the victim’s house solely to ask for money, and stated that the events unfolded “just happened.” His responses raised concerns among investigators about his psychological state and intent.

Circumstances Surrounding the Crime

The timeline of the incident suggests that Meena exploited the victim’s solitary morning routine. Investigators stated that the accused had worked as a domestic helper for the victim’s family for nearly a year, allowing him to understand their daily schedule. On the day of the murder, he allegedly used a spare key to enter the home without forced entry.

CCTV footage captured Meena entering the residential area around 6:30 am and leaving shortly after. Reports indicate that the victim was studying when he entered and demanded money. An altercation ensued, resulting in a violent assault. Police sources mention that he first tried to strangle her, leading to her unconsciousness before committing sexual assault and delivering fatal blows with a heavy object.

Following the assault, forensic teams found significant blood evidence spread throughout the property, which underscored the severity of the crime. While attempting to steal valuables amounting to approximately Rs 2.5 lakh, Meena allegedly tried to unlock a digital lock using the victim’s fingerprint but was unsuccessful. He reportedly fled the scene after changing into the victim’s brother’s pants and has since been on the run.

The victim’s father discovered her unconscious and immediately contacted the authorities. Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the hospital, prompting police to file charges including rape, murder, and robbery. Investigators also revealed that Meena had attempted to evade law enforcement following an alleged molestation incident just a day prior to the murder.

As the investigation continues, police remain focused on gathering additional evidence to piece together the full story behind this heinous crime. The case has underscored issues of safety and security, prompting public discourse on violence against women in the country.
