The Delhi Government has taken a significant step towards empowering women by approving the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana. This initiative, formalised during a Cabinet meeting on July 28, 2026, will provide eligible women with financial assistance of Rs 2,500 per month through direct benefit transfers. The government’s aim is to start releasing the first instalment by Raksha Bandhan, which falls on August 28, following the completion of application verifications.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the cabinet’s decision, emphasising the importance of this scheme as part of the BJP government’s electoral commitments. The initiative is specifically designed to support economically disadvantaged women in the capital, helping them achieve greater financial stability.

The eligibility criteria for this programme include being a permanent resident of Delhi, aged between 21 and 60 years, and having resided in the city for a minimum of ten years. Furthermore, the initiative will allow only one woman per household to benefit, aiming to select the eldest woman in cases where multiple candidates qualify.

Registration Process and Requirements

The registration for the Lakshmi Yojana will commence on August 1, allowing eligible candidates ample time to apply. Prospective applicants will need to submit a self-declaration confirming their residency status in Delhi for at least ten years, as well as affirming they have no criminal record. This documentation is critical to maintain the integrity of the scheme and ensure that assistance reaches those who genuinely require it.

Additionally, specific exclusions will apply to the beneficiaries. Families with an annual income exceeding the established limit, those owning a four-wheeler, or individuals already receiving certain government financial aids will not be eligible for this scheme. These criteria aim to target the financial assistance specifically towards those in the greatest need without overlapping with existing support systems.

The government had initially introduced the scheme under the name Mahila Samriddhi Yojana. However, it was later rebranded as the Delhi Lakshmi Yojana, while still maintaining the promised monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500. This renaming demonstrates the administration’s focus on creating a straightforward and impactful programme for women’s empowerment.
