INS Sudarshini Completes Visit to Casablanca, Strengthening India-Morocco Maritime Ties

The CSR Journal Magazine

INS Sudarshini, the Indian Navy’s Sail Training Ship, has successfully concluded its port call in Casablanca, which was highlighted as a significant event in bolstering maritime cooperation between India and Morocco. The visit, which lasted until April 18, was part of the Lokayan 26 deployment aimed at fostering international naval partnerships. An official press release from the Ministry of Defence detailed the nature and outcomes of this engagement.

Professional Engagements During the Visit

During the stay in Casablanca, the Commanding Officer of INS Sudarshini engaged in professional interactions with senior officials of the Moroccan Navy. These discussions focused on potential training exchanges and areas for maritime collaboration. Such exchanges are seen as essential for reinforcing the professional ties between the naval forces of both nations.

Alongside formal meetings, the visit included direct interactions between the crew members of INS Sudarshini and cadets from the Royal Moroccan Naval School. Activities included cross-deck visits, which facilitated practical learning experiences, as well as friendly sporting events designed to foster camaraderie. This aspect of the visit underscored the cultural exchanges that accompany military engagements.

The Ministry of Defence affirmed that the visit was a pivotal moment in enhancing the Indo-Morocco maritime partnership. It emphasised the importance of collaborative training efforts, which align with the wider goals of mutual learning and shared understanding between naval forces. The principle of ‘Lokayan’ was said to be clearly reflected in these active engagements.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

INS Sudarshini’s visit also included diplomatic activities that played a role in strengthening bilateral relations. An onboard reception was hosted by the Indian ship, complemented by a reciprocal luncheon organised by the Royal Moroccan Navy. These events were aimed at building professional and cultural connections beyond mere military cooperation.

Following the three-day visit, INS Sudarshini has now set sail for Las Palmas, Spain, continuing its journey to promote goodwill across the seas. The ship carries with it not only the spirit of cooperation but also the message of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, reinforcing the belief in a unified global family.

Earlier, on April 15, INS Sudarshini had made its initial port call in Casablanca as part of the transoceanic deployment under the ongoing Lokayan 26 initiative. The Ministry of Defence emphasised that this visit marks an important milestone in the Indian Navy’s sustained efforts to deepen maritime engagements and enhance international outreach.

Future Prospects and Past Engagements

The visit has been part of a broader context of maritime cooperation, with previous visits by Indian naval vessels to Casablanca. Ships like INS Tabar, INS Tarkash, INS Sumedha, and INS Tushil have previously docked at Moroccan ports, significantly enhancing mutual trust and interoperability between the naval forces of India and Morocco.

Moreover, the strengthening of ties was also showcased by the visit of RAdm Mohamed Tahin, Inspector of the Royal Moroccan Navy, to the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy in November 2025. Such interactions illustrate a continued commitment to fostering enduring naval relations and strategic partnerships. This ongoing dialogue reflects a shared commitment to security and stability in the maritime domain.
