Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono to Visit New Delhi From June 6–8 to Strengthen India-Indonesia Cooperation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono, is set to arrive in New Delhi on June 6, 2026, leading a high-level delegation as part of a significant effort to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Indonesia. This official visit will last three days, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation across various strategic sectors. Accompanying Sugiono will be Marlyn Maisarah Sugiono, aiming to hold essential discussions during this critical diplomatic engagement.

Joint Commission Meeting To Review Progress on Commitments

The visit will include a notable Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) on June 7, where both nations will evaluate the advancements made since the commitments established during Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit in January 2025. The JCM serves as a key platform for assessing the progress of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was elevated in 2018.

A Joint Commission Mechanism was originally established in January 2001, initiated by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) concerning cooperation at the Foreign Ministers’ level. The most recent JCM took place on June 17, 2022, in New Delhi, co-chaired by India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and former Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi. These meetings are integral to maintaining momentum in the partnership.

In line with previous agreements, the first round of Foreign Office Consultations was conducted in Bali, Indonesia, on June 17, 2013, followed by the eighth session held on September 26, 2024, in New Delhi. These consultations focus on various bilateral issues and provide a structured framework for ongoing discussions.

Focus on Counter-Terrorism and Regional Cooperation

The two countries have prioritised cooperation in counter-terrorism. Following the signing of an MoU in 2004, the inaugural meeting of the India-Indonesia Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism convened in New Delhi in February 2005. The most recent meeting in this area took place in Jakarta on August 23, 2024, further solidifying the commitment to addressing shared security challenges.

On May 14, 2026, Jaishankar met with Sugiono prior to the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting, where they discussed advancements made under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and within the ASEAN framework. Jaishankar acknowledged the positive developments in their cooperation through a social media post. This ongoing dialogue signifies the importance both nations place on bilateral relations and collective security within the region.

As the two largest democracies in Southeast and South Asia, India and Indonesia are pivotal players in regional dynamics. Their collaboration has consistently evolved, with both nations engaging in various ASEAN-led initiatives, particularly the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the years 2026-2030. The upcoming visit is expected to further reinforce these collaborative efforts.

Indonesian Delegation Scheduled to Depart on June 8

Following the conclusion of the JCM and related discussions, the Indonesian delegation will depart from New Delhi on the morning of June 8. This visit is considered essential for maintaining a dynamic and responsive bilateral relationship that can adapt to the shifting geopolitical environment in the region.

Observers believe that the trip reflects the ongoing commitment of both nations to strengthen ties and enhance collaborative initiatives, not just within the scope of bilateral relations, but also in the broader Southeast Asian context. As India and Indonesia prepare for their respective paths forward, this visit may prove to be a crucial chapter in their diplomatic history.
