The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Embassy in Azerbaijan successfully organised an Indian Food Festival on April 20, 2023, at its premises in Baku. This event highlighted the vibrancy of Indian culture through its diverse cuisines, engaging performances, and various diplomatic interactions. The festival attracted a large audience, showcasing the rich flavours and cultural heritage that India has to offer.

Diverse Offerings and Cultural Performances

The festival featured an extensive range of food stalls presenting authentic Indian dishes sourced from various regions across India. Attendees had the opportunity to savour aromatic biryanis, succulent kebabs, and buttery naans representing North India; coconut-rich delicacies and dosas from South India; mustard-tempered specialities of East India; and the fiery flavours of coastal West Indian cuisine. These culinary delights provided guests with an immersive experience of India’s gastronomic diversity.

Alongside the culinary offerings, there were exhibition and sales counters that showcased Indian spices, traditional fabrics, handicrafts, and other merchandise. This allowed visitors to take a piece of Indian culture home with them. Interactive activities enhanced the atmosphere, including a prominent Mehndi (henna) corner, fun Tambola games, and live performances featuring classical and folk Indian dances, as well as music fusion acts. Participants also engaged in yoga sessions, highlighting the connection between Indian cuisine, wellness, and spirituality.

Ambassador Abhay Kumar delivered a warm welcome to the attendees, including several ambassadors, Azerbaijani officials, and members of the Indian diaspora. He underscored the importance of Indian cuisine as a reflection of India’s ancient civilisation and its philosophy, ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’, emphasising the host’s role in treating guests as divine. The Ambassador articulated that food embodies love, generosity, and cultural identity, and noted that this festival serves to reinforce the cultural ties and friendships between India, Azerbaijan, and other friendly nations.

Significance of the Festival

Highlighting the festival’s significance, Ambassador Kumar mentioned that its timing in April coincides with harvest festivals celebrated in India and many other nations. This occasion also marked the first time the Annapurna Divas, a day dedicated to celebrating Indian cuisine globally, was observed in Baku. The mention of Annapurna, the goddess of food and nourishment, served to emphasise the festival’s thematic elements and cultural context.

The Ambassador also spoke about the Embassy’s continuous efforts in promoting cultural initiatives, such as the Baku Evenings series and Bharat Filmotsav, the Indian Film Festival, which have been met with enthusiasm from the Azerbaijani public. He expressed pride that the Indian Food Festival represents another advancement in fostering cultural understanding and friendship between the two nations.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks, honouring the Indian chefs and hotels that contributed to the festival by presenting authentic flavours to the guests. The positive response from attendees reflected their appreciation for the authentic cuisine, dynamic cultural performances, and the inviting hospitality offered by the Embassy. Many attendees described their experience as a memorable ‘taste of India in Baku’, highlighting the festival’s successful culmination.
