The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has officially reduced the country’s athletics contingent for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, resulting in the exclusion of former javelin gold medallist Annu Rani. Rani, who secured gold in the women’s javelin throw at the last edition, failed to meet the qualification criteria established by the AFI during the final trial held in Delhi on Thursday, which led to her omission from the squad.

The elimination was confirmed by AFI Selection Committee chairman Adille Sumariwalla, who stated that Rani did not achieve the necessary qualification mark during the decisive trial. Furthermore, the final assessment saw the reduction of the athletics squad from the initial 77 athletes named on September 3 to 74.

Other Athletes Also Dropped From Contingent

In addition to Rani, sprinter Nithya Gandhe and promising long jumper Shahnavaz Khan were also removed from the athletics team. Gandhe reportedly faced health-related issues, while Khan’s exclusion was attributed to underperformance, as explained by Sumariwalla. These decisions were part of a broader review conducted by the selection committee to ensure that only the athletes who meet the required standards are included in the contingent.

Rani’s recent attempt at the Indian Athletics Series Final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was a crucial opportunity for her to perform and secure her spot on the team. Although she won the gold with a throw measuring 57.21 metres, this result fell short of the qualification benchmark outlined by the AFI, leading to her eventual exclusion. The failure to meet the standard serves as a stark reminder of the competitive nature of athletics, even for a seasoned athlete like Rani.
