India Moving Towards Building Its Own Space Station, Says PM Modi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India is preparing for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight mission and moving towards establishing its own space station, underlining the country’s growing ambitions in space exploration, green energy and advanced nuclear technology.

Addressing the Indian community in Paris, Modi said the aspirations and determination of the people are powering India’s development journey. He also announced that India and France will jointly launch the TRISHNA satellite next year, describing the partnership between the two countries as a pillar of trust and stability amid global uncertainty.

PM Modi Highlights India’s Space Ambitions

Speaking about India’s progress in the space sector, Modi said the country has continued to pursue larger goals after the success of the Chandrayaan mission.

“Today, the people of India want to take their lives to the next level, and their goal is to take India to the next level as well. They have determination, they have dreams. And these aspirations are the greatest strength of India’s development journey today,” he said.

Referring to India’s lunar mission, the Prime Minister said, “I will give you the example of India’s space journey. India landed Chandrayaan on the Moon’s South Pole. The world recognised this as a huge achievement. But India didn’t stop there. Today, the country is preparing for Gaganyaan. Today, India is moving forward towards building its own space station.”

According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Gaganyaan is India’s first indigenous human spaceflight programme and aims to demonstrate the country’s capability to safely send a three-member crew to Low Earth Orbit at an altitude of 300-400 kilometres for up to seven days before a splashdown recovery in Indian waters.

Focus on Green Hydrogen and Advanced Nuclear Energy

Modi said the same spirit of ambition is visible in India’s efforts to strengthen its clean energy ecosystem.

“This same aspiration is visible in the field of green energy. India’s achievements in solar power are constantly discussed worldwide. But India is preparing for the next leap. Major investments are being made in green hydrogen. Work on advanced nuclear energy is progressing rapidly,” he said.

Highlighting progress in the nuclear sector, the Prime Minister said India’s fast breeder reactor programme represented a major achievement for the country’s scientific community.

“You’ve also likely heard about the progress made with India’s fast breeder nuclear reactor. This is a major achievement by our scientists, revolutionising India’s nuclear energy landscape,” he added.

India-France Partnership and TRISHNA Mission

Modi said India and France have built a relationship based on trust, stability and cooperation at a time when the world is witnessing disruption and uncertainty.

Announcing a major collaborative project between the two countries, he said India and France would jointly launch the TRISHNA satellite next year.

“Now, together, we are going to launch the Trishna satellite next year. This Trishna satellite will contribute to ensuring food and water security in the world,” the Prime Minister said.

TRISHNA, or Thermal InfraRed Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural Resource Assessment, is a joint Earth observation mission being developed by ISRO and the French space agency CNES.

The satellite is designed to monitor land and water resources through advanced thermal infrared imaging and is expected to provide data related to agriculture, water management, climate monitoring and environmental sustainability.

The mission is aimed at supporting global efforts to strengthen food and water security while further deepening space cooperation between India and France.
