India, Indonesia Deepen Strategic Partnership With Defence, Trade And Technology Agreements

India and Indonesia on Tuesday reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto agreeing to expand cooperation across defence, maritime security, trade, critical minerals, technology, energy and regional security.

During wide-ranging talks in Jakarta, the two leaders welcomed enhanced cooperation on the BrahMos missile system and air-to-air missiles, progress on minerals and steel supply chains, India’s interest in developing Sabang Port and agreements covering digital payments, telecommunications, healthcare and space. The two countries also strongly condemned terrorism and reaffirmed support for a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific.

India, Indonesia Agree To Hold Regular Summit Meetings

According to a joint statement, Modi’s state visit from July 6 to 8 marked an important milestone in bilateral relations following Prabowo’s visit to India as Chief Guest for the 76th Republic Day celebrations in January 2025.

The two leaders agreed to hold regular summit meetings, including on the sidelines of multilateral events, while strengthening existing bilateral dialogue mechanisms.

Modi and Prabowo held bilateral talks in Jakarta and witnessed the exchange of several agreements aimed at expanding cooperation between the two countries.

During the visit, Modi also addressed the Indonesian Parliament, attended an Indian community reception and joined Prabowo in inaugurating restoration and conservation work at the UNESCO World Heritage Prambanan Temple Compounds in Yogyakarta.

BrahMos And Air-To-Air Missile Cooperation To Boost Defence Ties

India and Indonesia reaffirmed their commitment to expanding defence cooperation through regular dialogues, joint military exercises, staff talks and defence research.

The two countries also agreed to strengthen cooperation in the co-production of defence technologies, hydrography, peacekeeping, information sharing and defence industries.

The leaders welcomed the expansion of defence cooperation through collaboration on the BrahMos missile system and the Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation Agreement.

The agreements are expected to strengthen growing security ties between New Delhi and Jakarta and expand collaboration between their defence industries.

Maritime Security Cooperation Expanded

Modi and Prabowo agreed to deepen maritime cooperation in areas including maritime domain awareness, coastal surveillance, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, pollution control, and search and rescue operations.

The leaders welcomed the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Safety and Security Cooperation.

They also welcomed the implementing arrangement between Indonesia’s BAKAMLA and the Indian Coast Guard.

Indonesia’s deployment of an International Liaison Officer at the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region in Gurugram was also highlighted as an important step in strengthening maritime information sharing.

India, Indonesia Strongly Condemn Terrorism

The two leaders “unequivocally and strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations” and called for decisive international action against terrorism.

They sought action against globally proscribed terrorists and terrorist organisations listed by the United Nations Security Council’s 1267 Sanctions Committee.

India and Indonesia agreed to strengthen cooperation on counter-terrorism, terror financing, cyber security, organised crime and preventing terrorists from misusing emerging technologies.

Trade, Critical Minerals And Supply Chains In Focus

Modi and Prabowo identified trade and investment as an important pillar of bilateral relations and called for the early conclusion of the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement.

The two countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in finance, the digital economy, critical minerals and resilient supply chains.

The leaders welcomed agreements aimed at strengthening minerals and steel supply chains, including a strategic joint venture between Steel Authority of India Limited and PT Krakatau Steel.

The proposed joint venture will explore the establishment of a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia.

The two sides also noted progress on local currency transactions between the Reserve Bank of India and Bank Indonesia to facilitate bilateral trade and investment.

Cooperation To Expand In Healthcare, Agriculture And Energy

India and Indonesia reaffirmed cooperation in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food security, energy and fertilisers.

The leaders welcomed agreements covering professional health workforce development and the regulation of medical products.

Both countries agreed to expand collaboration in renewable energy, green hydrogen, liquefied natural gas, bioenergy and energy efficiency.

India Shows Interest In Integrated Development Of Sabang Port

The two countries agreed to improve maritime and air connectivity and welcomed India’s interest in partnering with Indonesia in the integrated development of Sabang Port.

The project could strengthen connectivity between India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Indonesia’s Sumatra region.

India and Indonesia also welcomed Indonesia’s Open Network initiative, which is based on India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce architecture.

The two sides noted progress on cross-border QR payment linkage and welcomed an agreement covering telecommunications technologies and services.

India, Indonesia Expand Space Cooperation

Modi and Prabowo welcomed continued cooperation between the Indian Space Research Organisation and Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency.

The leaders welcomed the extension of the framework agreement on cooperation in the peaceful uses of outer space and collaboration related to India’s Gaganyaan mission.

Prabowo welcomed India’s support for Indonesian satellite launches and cooperation in developing the country’s space ecosystem, including a proposed spaceport project in Indonesia.

2026-27 To Be Marked As Tagore-Dewantara Year

Modi and Prabowo inaugurated India-supported restoration work at the UNESCO World Heritage Prambanan Temple Compounds.

The two countries agreed to commemorate 2026-27 as the “Tagore-Dewantara Year of India-Indonesia Cultural and Educational Diplomacy”.

The year-long programme will mark the centenary of Rabindranath Tagore’s 1927 visit to Indonesia through cultural and educational activities.

The leaders also welcomed the proposed establishment of an Indian Institute of Management Bangalore campus in Indonesia and encouraged greater academic exchanges and institutional partnerships.

Cooperation between the Election Commission of India and Indonesia’s General Election Commission and proposed collaboration in official statistics were also welcomed.

India, Indonesia Back Rules-Based Indo-Pacific And UN Reforms

On regional and global issues, the two leaders reaffirmed support for reforming the United Nations Security Council and strengthening the voice of the Global South.

Indonesia reiterated support for India’s BRICS Chairship in 2026, while India pledged support for Indonesia’s role as a BRICS member.

The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to a “free, open, transparent, rules-based, peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region”.

They also stressed respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, international law and freedom of navigation in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Leaders Call For De-Escalation In West Asia

Modi and Prabowo expressed concern over the situation in West Asia and welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding signed on June 17, 2026.

The agreement called for de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy.

The leaders also stressed the importance of protecting freedom of navigation and transit through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law.

Modi thanked Prabowo for the hospitality extended during his state visit and invited the Indonesian President to visit India at a mutually convenient time.

Indian Diaspora Welcomes Outcomes Of Modi’s Visit

Members of the Indian diaspora in Indonesia welcomed Modi’s visit and the agreements reached during his talks with Prabowo.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto share a very good friendship. The environment was historic today, and many MoUs were signed between the two countries, which will strengthen our relations,” a member of the Indian community said.

A young attendee also praised the speeches delivered by Modi and Prabowo during the community event.

“Even though PM Modi’s speech was pretty long, it was still really good. When I listened to the President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto’s speech, it was actually not how I expected. I expected it to be very formal, but it’s actually funny, and I really liked his speech,” the attendee said.
