India Commissions Stealth Frigate INS Taragiri in Major Boost to Naval Strength

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has officially commissioned the INS Taragiri, an advanced stealth frigate, in a ceremony held in Visakhapatnam. This new addition to the Indian Navy represents a substantial enhancement of the nation’s maritime capabilities. The event took place on February 1, 2025, in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, marking a significant milestone in India’s naval development.

The frigate, classified as the fourth ship of the Project 17A class, is specifically designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. The project has seen considerable involvement from Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the country, highlighting the collaborative efforts in bolstering India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Technological Features and Operational Capabilities

The INS Taragiri has a displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes, boasting over seventy-five per cent indigenous content. Equipped with cutting-edge stealth technologies, the vessel is engineered to have a minimal radar signature, enhancing its capabilities for multi-role operations. These operations include high-intensity combat, maritime security, anti-piracy missions, coastal surveillance, and humanitarian assistance interventions.

Defence Minister Singh elaborated on the frigate’s advanced features, indicating its high-speed transit capabilities and prolonged deployment ability at sea. The ship is outfitted with modern radar, sonar, and missile systems, including BrahMos and surface-to-air missiles. These systems equip the INS Taragiri to monitor potential threats effectively and respond rapidly when necessary.

As part of its operational role, the frigate will enhance India’s mission capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region, signalling a strong commitment to maritime security and national defence. The vessel’s advanced technologies signify a leap forward in India’s ability to design and build sophisticated warships domestically.

Strategic Importance of Maritime Security

In his address, Rajnath Singh underscored the critical nature of marine routes to India’s economy, noting that nearly ninety-five per cent of the nation’s trade transits through these pathways. Additionally, he stressed the significance of energy security and coastal integrity, emphasising that India’s development is intricately linked to its maritime security framework.

Singh pointed out that, in light of evolving global challenges, the Indian Navy maintains an enduring presence throughout the Indian Ocean Region. This strategic positioning is vital for securing essential sea lanes and chokepoints, thereby ensuring the uninterrupted flow of goods. He remarked that the Navy plays a pivotal role during escalation events, intervening to protect commercial vessels and oil tankers to uphold India’s stature as a responsible maritime power.

Broader Implications for Defence Manufacturing

The Defence Minister highlighted the growing trend of defence exports, which have risen from approximately Rs 1,200 crore a decade ago to an anticipated Rs 38,424 crore in the fiscal year 2025-26. This increase reflects the substantial transformation within India’s defence manufacturing sector and its increasing self-reliance.

Moreover, Singh acknowledged the necessity of safeguarding undersea digital infrastructure, noting that a majority of global data now traverses through subsea internet cables. He advocated for a comprehensive and future-oriented approach to maritime security, asserting that the Indian Navy plays an active role in protecting both coastal integrity and vital maritime as well as digital assets.

Through its ongoing efforts, the Indian Navy aims to establish itself as a formidable maritime force, capable of managing and responding to various maritime challenges efficiently.
