The CSR Journal Magazine

The Kanpur Police have successfully dismantled an inter-district gang allegedly engaged in the theft of electricity transformers and associated wiring throughout Uttar Pradesh. In a recent operation, authorities apprehended eight individuals, including a scrap dealer accused of purchasing the stolen materials. The police seized a total of 164 kg of aluminium wire, 98 kg of copper binding, three transformer coils, and Rs 68,000 in cash during the raid.

According to the police, the gang operated across multiple districts, including Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Lucknow, and Fatehpur. A collaborative effort involving the Chaubeypur police, SWAT, and surveillance teams from the West Zone led to the arrests and the recovery of cash, transformer components, and metal wires that were allegedly stolen from various transformers.

Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a black Scorpio vehicle, detaining and searching seven individuals travelling inside. The search yielded Rs 68,000 in cash, eight bundles of aluminium wire weighing 164 kg, three coils of copper binding weighing 98 kg, and three transformer coils. During interrogation, the suspects disclosed that the cash was obtained from selling internal components of transformers that had been stolen earlier.

Details of the Arrested Individuals and Their Criminal Backgrounds

The police identified the arrested individuals as Ranjeet Srivastava (47), Umesh Gupta (35), Chandan (24), Alok Pandey (30), Devansh Dubey (20), Aditya Mishra (23), and Gautam Rajput alias Thapa (31). All the individuals are residents of Kanpur, although some have origins in Fatehpur and West Bengal. Authorities noted that the gang has a history of criminal activity, with cases registered against them in various police stations across Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Fatehpur, and Lucknow.

Among the arrested, Alok Pandey reportedly has the highest number of criminal cases against him. The charges include theft and the purchase of stolen property, which indicates a pattern of illegal activity within the group. The police are currently examining the criminal records of the accused to ascertain the full extent of their involvement in the thefts.

In addition to the arrests, the police seized the Scorpio vehicle used in the thefts under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicles Act. This vehicle reportedly belongs to another accused, Ranjeet Srivastava. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover any additional individuals who may have participated in the criminal operations.

Continuing Investigation and Legal Proceedings

All eight individuals have been placed in judicial custody as the investigation continues. The police are actively pursuing leads to identify other potential accomplices involved in the racket. Authorities are also focused on gathering further evidence related to the thefts, which have raised concerns about the safety and security of electrical infrastructure in the region.

The police’s efforts to combat such criminal activities highlight the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in addressing theft and related crimes. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to assist law enforcement in maintaining public safety.

As the investigation unfolds, police officials remain committed to ensuring that those involved in the theft of transformers and associated materials are brought to justice. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling organised crime in Uttar Pradesh.
