Chennai–Colombo Emerges as a Key Economic Corridor for India

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Chennai–Colombo route offers significant advantages for business executives, allowing them to leave in the morning and return the same evening after attending meetings. This direct flight option provides a more efficient alternative compared to longer journeys to cities like Delhi, which are nearly three times the distance. Such geographical proximity is not merely a trivial detail but a potential catalyst for enhancing commercial ties between India and Sri Lanka.

From Chennai’s perspective, Colombo represents not just a foreign destination but a burgeoning commercial opportunity. Recent findings from a Pew Research survey indicate that Sri Lanka holds a notably positive view of India, with 79 per cent of respondents expressing favourable opinions, a marked increase from 65 per cent in 2024. This shift in public sentiment underscores the growing economic relationship between the two nations.

The challenge now lies in leveraging this geographical closeness into tangible business advantages. The Chennai–Colombo route could play a pivotal role in India’s next phase of regional engagement, particularly in sectors like trade, investment, and tourism.

Strengthening Economic Ties Through Trade and Investment

Bilateral trade between India and Sri Lanka has reached approximately $7.1 billion in the fiscal year 2025–26. Additionally, cumulative Indian investments in Sri Lanka have surpassed $2.8 billion, covering various sectors such as energy, hospitality, manufacturing, infrastructure, and financial services. India has also emerged as the largest source of tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka, further solidifying the economic bond between the two nations.

Enhanced air connectivity from Indian cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi, Madurai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai has made Colombo increasingly accessible to Indian travellers. This growing accessibility is expected to further boost tourism and business exchanges, laying a robust foundation for future economic collaboration.

However, the next phase of this relationship may focus more on the movement of capabilities rather than just goods. Companies are increasingly seeking locations for research and development, product development, and specialised support functions. For South Indian firms, Colombo is becoming a logical extension of this search for operational efficiency.

Future Prospects for Chennai–Colombo Economic Corridor

The rise of Nano Global Capability Centres (GCCs) exemplifies this trend. Unlike traditional GCCs that employ large numbers of staff, these centres consist of smaller teams of highly skilled professionals specialising in areas such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Their focus on capability rather than headcount makes them well-suited for Sri Lanka’s market, offering a secondary location for companies rather than a full-scale head office.

Geographic proximity facilitates these operations, and the shared time zone between India and Sri Lanka serves as an additional advantage. However, the realisation of this potential hinges on regulatory certainty. Sri Lanka’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs), including Port City Colombo, are establishing a framework with transparent regulations, multi-currency banking, and expedited approvals for investors.

A common legal jurisdiction and an English-speaking business environment will further encourage Indian firms to integrate into the SEZ framework, thereby minimising the complexities often associated with cross-border operations. India’s economic expansion is creating a new class of businesses eager to explore opportunities in neighbouring markets, and the Chennai–Colombo corridor could play an essential role in this endeavour.
