Apple Launches Upgraded iPad Mini Priced at Rs 82,900, Marking a Rs 33,000 Increase

The CSR Journal Magazine

The latest iteration of Apple’s iPad mini has seen a substantial upgrade, now retailing at Rs 82,900. This significant price adjustment raises questions about consumer willingness to invest in a compact tablet that has traditionally been celebrated for its portability and affordability. The new model, unveiled on Monday, features an OLED display, an A20 Pro processor, enhanced connectivity, and improved water resistance, marking a considerable advancement over its predecessor.

Previously, the iPad mini launched in October 2024 was priced at Rs 49,900 in India. The new model’s price reflects an increase of Rs 33,000, equating to approximately 66 per cent more than its predecessor. Furthermore, the Wi-Fi and cellular variant starts at Rs 1,00,900, surpassing the Rs 1 lakh threshold, which could deter potential buyers.

This price hike is notable, especially for a product that has historically been positioned as a more accessible entry point into the iPad ecosystem. The increased cost may lead to reconsideration among consumers who valued the iPad mini for its affordability and convenience.

Enhanced Features and Performance

Apple justifies the price increase by highlighting the new features of the iPad mini. The 8.5-inch OLED display promises vibrant colours, deeper blacks, and improved contrast compared to the previous LCD panel. With a peak brightness of 1,200 nits and thinner bezels, the device offers a larger screen without significantly increasing its size. The new model also boasts a thinner profile at 5.4mm and is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance.

Internally, the A20 Pro chip provides notable performance enhancements, including up to 60 per cent faster multithreaded CPU performance, 2.7 times quicker graphics, and 4.5 times better AI performance compared to the prior model. Additionally, it supports Wi-Fi 7, features a landscape-oriented 12MP front camera, and offers faster charging options, making it an appealing choice for users who plan to keep their tablets for an extended period.

The iPad mini serves a unique niche within Apple’s product range. Its compact size makes it suitable for various tasks such as reading, note-taking, and casual gaming, appealing to professionals like doctors and pilots who require portability. However, for users primarily engaged in video consumption or extensive document work, larger iPad models may provide a more comfortable experience.

Market Position and Consumer Considerations

Apple’s pricing strategy reflects a broader shift in its product approach, treating compactness as a premium feature rather than a budget-friendly option. The costs associated with integrating advanced technology into a smaller device allow Apple to target a specific audience willing to pay for a high-performance compact tablet.

This strategy may resonate with loyal customers of the mini, although the market for small premium tablets remains limited. The previous iPad mini already offered strong performance and access to Apple’s extensive app ecosystem, which may not compel existing users to upgrade solely for the new display and processor.

In India, consumers are particularly sensitive to price changes, and the Rs 33,000 increase could significantly limit the demographic willing to justify an upgrade. While Apple may not require the mini to become a mass-market success, the question remains whether this approach will sustain the product’s appeal over time. The new iPad mini is undoubtedly more capable, but it may also be priced out of reach for many potential buyers.
