Vaishnavi Sharma Achieves Rare Five-Wicket Haul Against Zimbabwe

The CSR Journal Magazine

Vaishnavi Sharma made headlines by securing a remarkable five-wicket haul against Zimbabwe during the third women’s ODI held in Vadodara on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in Indian cricket. At just 20 years and 314 days, she became the second-youngest Indian woman to accomplish this feat in One Day Internationals (ODIs), and the youngest in the last decade.

The record for the youngest remains with Deepti Sharma, who achieved figures of 6/20 against Sri Lanka in Ranchi in 2016. This achievement adds to Vaishnavi’s growing reputation as a talented left-arm spinner. Her performance not only showcased her skills but also contributed to India’s dominance in the series, as they secured a 3-0 victory against Zimbabwe.

Impressive Performance Leading Up to the Match

Prior to the third ODI, Vaishnavi had already demonstrated her capabilities in the second match of the series, where she took 4 wickets for 39 runs in 10 overs, including a maiden over. This performance was instrumental in India’s 121-run victory, allowing them to take an unassailable lead of 2-0 in the series. Her ability to trouble the Zimbabwean batters was evident as she dismissed key players.

These include Beloved Biza and Modester Mupachikwa, contributing significantly to her team’s success. Vaishnavi’s consistent form and confidence were on full display in the final match. She entered the game with a clear intent to build on her previous success and put pressure on the Zimbabwean batting line-up from the outset. Her early wickets set the tone for the match, showcasing her skill and strategic thinking on the field.

As the match progressed, it became clear that Vaishnavi was in excellent rhythm. Her variations in flight, pace, and turn kept the Zimbabwean batters guessing, making it increasingly difficult for them to settle at the crease. Her tactical approach proved effective, leading to a series of dismissals that would ultimately secure her five-wicket haul.

Vaishnavi’s Spell and Key Dismissals

In her spell, Vaishnavi struck early by dismissing Biza for just one run, with Harmanpreet Kaur completing the catch at mid-on. Following this, she outsmarted Mupachikwa, who had been looking to attack. By altering the pace and line of her delivery, Vaishnavi induced a stumping by wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia, sending Mupachikwa back to the pavilion after scoring 37 runs.

Continuing her impressive performance, Vaishnavi dismissed Chiedza Dhururu, who attempted to play aggressively but ended up offering a leading edge, caught safely by Jintimani Kalita. Michelle Mavunga was her fourth victim, miscuing a shot that was caught by Harleen Deol at deep mid-on. This brought Vaishnavi within one wicket of her five-wicket haul.

Vaishnavi saved her best for last, returning to the attack to claim her fifth wicket by dismissing Nyasha Gwanzura. The Zimbabwean batter’s attempt to slog resulted in an inside edge that ricocheted onto the stumps, completing Vaishnavi’s five-wicket haul. Her exceptional bowling performance led to Zimbabwe being bowled out for 131 runs in 39.5 overs, highlighting her crucial role in India’s victory.
