Abhishek Sharma Reclaims No. 1 Spot, Shreyas Iyer Slips Amid Lean Patch

The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhishek Sharma has reclaimed the top position in the ICC Men’s T20I batting rankings following an impressive century against New Zealand in Wellington. His remarkable innings of 113 runs off just 38 balls in the third T20I match on October 27, 2026, propelled India to a six-wicket victory and secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Sharma reached his century in a mere 35 deliveries, showcasing his explosive batting style. This performance allowed him to surpass teammate Ishan Kishan, who had held the top spot since July 2026 after his consistent performances during India’s T20I series against Ireland. Following Sharma’s latest achievement, Kishan has dropped to third place, with Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan now occupying the second position in the rankings.

Previously, Sharma first ascended to the No. 1 ranking in July 2025, overtaking Australia’s Travis Head. He maintained this position for nearly a year until Kishan’s strong performances, including contributions during the T20 World Cup, allowed him to take the lead. Sharma’s recent innings further emphasises his capacity to make a significant impact at the international level.

Impact of Sharma’s Innings

During the match, India chased down New Zealand’s total of 198 runs for three wickets, reaching 199 runs for four wickets in just 13.2 overs. Sharma’s partnership with teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was pivotal, as they added 133 runs for the first wicket. Sooryavanshi contributed 45 runs off 19 balls, setting a vigorous tone for the innings.

Sharma’s innings featured nine fours and 11 sixes, resulting in a strike rate of nearly 298. His previous contributions in the series included scores of 29 and 27 in the first two matches, culminating in his match-winning performance in Wellington. This consistency has been instrumental in his return to the top of the rankings.

In contrast, Shreyas Iyer, the captain of the Indian team, has faced challenges with his batting form. After a strong start in the series against the West Indies, where he scored an unbeaten 102 runs in the opening match, Iyer’s performance has declined. He has struggled to replicate that form in New Zealand, scoring only 42 runs in the first T20I and a mere seven and five runs in the subsequent matches.

Iyer’s Recent Struggles

Iyer’s most recent innings in Wellington was particularly disappointing, as he managed only five runs off 10 deliveries before being dismissed by Mitchell Santner. Despite his struggles, India’s aggressive batting approach ensured that Iyer’s performance did not adversely affect the outcome of the match, with the team successfully completing the chase with 40 balls remaining.

His recent scores indicate a significant downturn in form following an impressive start to the home series against the West Indies. As the series continues, Indian batters will be keen to solidify their positions in the top ten of the rankings, especially with two more T20Is scheduled in New Zealand.

The fourth match of the series will take place in Auckland on Friday, followed by the final match in Hamilton on Sunday, November 1, 2026. As the competition intensifies, players will be eager to enhance their standings in the ICC T20I batting rankings.
