The CSR Journal Magazine

On February 25, India chose to abstain from a United Nations General Assembly vote concerning a draft resolution advocating for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This resolution, entitled ‘Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine,’ was ratified on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Out of a total of 193 member nations, the resolution garnered 107 votes in favor, faced 12 opposition votes, and had 51 abstentions. India was among the countries opting to abstain, joining a list that included Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.

Ukrainian President Acknowledges Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude towards the 107 countries that supported the resolution at the UN General Assembly. He highlighted the document’s significance as a substantial move towards achieving lasting peace, emphasizing the need for a full ceasefire and the repatriation of Ukrainian citizens. In a message posted on social media platform X, he stated that the backing received from these nations in favor of life and peace is invaluable.

Guterres Remarks on the Conflict

On the same day, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commemorated the fourth anniversary of Russia’s extensive military involvement in Ukraine and labeled the conflict a breach of international law while posing a threat to global stability. Guterres noted that this war has left a significant mark on the global conscience and continues to endanger peace both regionally and internationally. He underscored the impact on civilians, stating that 2025 recorded the highest number of civilian casualties since the onset of the war.

Call for Ceasefire from UN Leadership

Guterres called for an immediate and complete ceasefire, asserting it as a fundamental step towards establishing a fair and lasting peace. He emphasized the necessity for any peace agreement to align with international law, safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. His emphasis on the unacceptability of the ongoing conflict manifested in a call for collaborative efforts towards achieving peace.
