Imran Khan Undergoes Eye Examination at Adiala Jail Amid Controversy

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan underwent an eye examination at Adiala Jail on Sunday, following an order from the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party characterized the examination process as “malicious” and raised concerns over the exclusion of his family members and personal doctors.

A five-member medical team conducted the examination, which lasted approximately one hour and involved blood sample collection, blood pressure measurements, and the use of personal medical equipment. The examination commenced after a wait of two and a half hours, and a report is expected to be finalized soon.

Shortly after the examination concluded around 5:30 PM, PTI issued a statement asserting its disapproval of the procedure, emphasizing the lack of presence of Khan’s family and personal medical team. The statement declared, “Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf categorically rejects the recent conduct of the government and jail administration regarding the medical examination of Imran Khan’s eye.” The party accused the government of trying to divert attention from the main issues surrounding Khan’s medical care.

Family’s Credibility and Concerns Raised

Elaborating on their objections, PTI stated that decisions regarding medical care are constitutional and moral rights belonging to Imran Khan’s family. The party argued that the family cannot make informed decisions without the presence of Khan’s personal doctors during the examination. Imran’s sister, Aleema Khanum, voiced that any medical board formed without input from his personal doctors would not be accepted. She reiterated that their stance is clear: Imran Khan should not receive treatment without the involvement of his family and personal doctors.

Calling into question the refusal to allow Khan’s personal doctors to oversee the process, Aleema demanded clarity on why such resistance exists. The examination was prompted by the Supreme Court’s direction for a medical assessment following Khan’s claim on February 12 regarding significant vision loss in his right eye.

Government’s Position and Family’s Further Actions

Although government officials indicated the possibility of transferring Khan to a hospital, no such move had occurred as of Sunday afternoon. At 3:45 PM, Khan’s sister Noreen Khanum reported that an ambulance had arrived at the jail for a potential transfer. Yet, she maintained this would not be acceptable without consultation with personal doctors.

The jail superintendent dismissed claims about a transfer, reiterating that only a medical examination was in progress. He stated that the medical team would assess whether a hospital transfer was necessary or if Khan could continue treatment in jail.

Imran Khan had previously undergone a medical procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad at the end of January. Reports suggest that his personal physicians are advocating for a comprehensive evaluation at a higher-level facility due to his serious eye conditions.

Protests and Human Rights Concerns

Meanwhile, the Tehreek-i-Tahafuz-i-Ayin-i-Pakistan (TTAP) alliance continued its sit-in at Parliament House, demanding that Khan be treated at a hospital designated by his personal doctors. Notable PTI leaders expressed their commitment to advocating for Khan’s health. The relocation plan to Shifa International Hospital reportedly fell through due to disputes over the medical board’s composition.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has expressed significant concern regarding the health of prisoners affiliated with PTI, particularly Imran Khan, urging for immediate independent medical evaluations and unobstructed access to treatment. Protests calling for adequate care and humane treatment for all prisoners have intensified, emphasizing a commitment to human rights amidst political struggles.
