India and Canada Strengthen Strategic Partnership with Trade Goals

The CSR Journal Magazine

India and Canada conducted their annual Foreign Office Consultations on September 2, 2026, at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The meeting underscored both nations’ dedication to finalising a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of the year. The discussions were led by India’s Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Rudrendra Tandon, and Canada’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arun Thangaraj.

During the consultations, the two countries reiterated their goal to enhance bilateral trade, targeting a significant CAD 70 billion by the year 2030. This objective reflects a robust commitment to fostering deeper economic ties and collaboration across various sectors. The involvement of both high-level representatives highlights the strengthening diplomatic relations between the two nations.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the ongoing dialogue reaffirms the accelerating momentum in bilateral relations that has grown since mid-2025. Both parties reported that their commitment to shared democratic values and respect for territorial integrity serves as the foundation for their partnership.

Growth in Bilateral Relations and Key Discussions

The talks were underscored by discussions on several key topics, including mutual interests in regional and global matters. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on social media regarding the significant nature of the talks, stating that both sides welcomed the progress in their relationship. He specifically highlighted the expanding cooperation in essential sectors and the increasing institutional engagement between the respective governments.

In the lead-up to the consultations, India expressed readiness to begin talks on a Bilateral Investment Treaty with Canada. These discussions are anticipated to provide further impetus to the economic ties shared between the two nations. A recent gathering involving Finance Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Francois-Philippe Champagne aimed to discuss broader strategies for expanding bilateral trade towards the targeted $70 billion by 2030.

This initiative was further detailed in an official joint statement from the Ministry of Finance, which indicated that the dialogue aimed to enhance economic and financial cooperation between India and Canada. The commitment continued to evolve from discussions held in March 2026 between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where both leaders acknowledged the importance of concluding CEPA negotiations by the end of 2026.

Future Prospects of India-Canada Economic Ties

The evolving dialogue between India and Canada presents significant implications for future economic engagement. The ambitions set forth by both nations signal a robust framework for increased trade and investment, which may further unlock opportunities across various sectors such as technology and infrastructure. Investment treaties are expected to facilitate greater bilateral flow of capital and resources.

Such efforts align with the broader objectives of both countries to enhance their economic resilience amidst a constantly changing global landscape. The participation of senior government officials in these consultations reflects both nations’ commitment to ensuring that their economic interests align closely with shared strategic goals. Observers of international relations are keen to see how these discussions translate into actionable agreements.

As the year progresses, the potential for increased cooperation remains significant. Fostering a deeper partnership could yield substantial benefits for businesses and communities within both nations. With continued dialogue and commitment to shared priorities, the enhanced relationship between India and Canada is likely to evolve into a model for international cooperation in the coming years.
