The Tamil Nadu government has taken the significant step of suspending more than 60 employees from the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) in response to allegations of overcharging customers for liquor. This action, reportedly initiated in various cities, including Chennai, Madurai, Salem, Trichy, and Coimbatore, follows multiple complaints regarding extra fees being charged for liquor bottles. Customers have claimed they were asked to pay an additional Rs 10 or Rs 20 per bottle at the state-owned liquor stores.

This issue sparked a heated debate within the Tamil Nadu Assembly, where members of the ruling party and the opposition exchanged accusations of corruption. Prohibition and Excise Minister K Vignesh addressed the assembly, clarifying that the additional charge is not sanctioned by the government and sought to trace the origins of this practice back to the previous DMK administration.

Origins of Overcharging Allegations

The minister emphasised that steps have been taken by the current government, under Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, to increase employee salaries and address the systemic corruption so prevalent in the organisation. Vignesh’s remarks highlight an ongoing effort to improve working conditions within TASMAC while confronting allegations of financial misconduct.

Opposition members challenged this narrative, questioning the government’s justification for continuing a practice deemed corrupt just because it had historical roots. The assembly session witnessed arguments questioning the accountability of the current administration in correcting past wrongs.

Government’s Commitment to Address Corruption

Law Minister R Nirmal Kumar also contributed to the discussion, accusing the opposition of ignoring various corruption issues that the government is currently investigating. He cited specific cases involving tender irregularities and instances of alleged manipulation within the liquor licensing system. Vignesh acknowledged that reforming TASMAC is a complex process due to deeply entrenched practices within the organisation over the last two decades.

To address these challenges, the government is reportedly working on systemic reforms, which include better compensation for employees, official funding for shop operations, and aligning Tamil Nadu’s liquor administration with modern standards observed in other states. This motivation stems from an intent to eliminate unofficial charges and restore integrity to the state’s retail liquor network.

The debate grew intense when Public Works and Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna made remarks that allegedly implicated corruption in various sectors during earlier DMK tenures. This sparked protests from DMK members, leading to a walkout, highlighting the contentious nature of the ongoing dialogue regarding governance and integrity in the state.

Opposition’s Reaction to Assembly Proceedings

Following their departure from the Assembly, former ministers K N Nehru and V Senthil Balaji expressed their dissatisfaction with the handling of the discussion concerning grants for the Prohibition and Excise Department. They claimed that DMK members had asked the Speaker for an opportunity to address the allegations against them but were reportedly denied this chance. The opposition’s concerns reflect wider issues regarding parliamentary procedures and the accountability of public representatives.

As the Tamil Nadu government intensifies its crackdown on TASMAC employees accused of collecting fees beyond the published prices of liquor, it also underlines a commitment to broader reforms aimed at eliminating these unofficial charges within the state-run retail liquor network.
