Amardeep, a 29-year-old throwball player from Jharkhand, has significantly contributed to India’s reputation in international sports by winning four gold medals. His prestigious accolades include victories at the Asian Junior Throw-ball Championship in Malaysia in 2015, the Indo-Nepal Throw-ball Championship in Kathmandu in 2017, and more recently, the South Asian Throw-ball Championships in Bengaluru in 2019 and Ranchi in 2026. However, despite his athletic prowess, Amardeep faces significant financial challenges.

Currently, Amardeep sells vegetables at Argora Chowk in Ranchi and also drives a cab to support his family. His efforts to secure a government job have been stymied by the state’s sports policy, leaving him in a precarious position despite his contributions to the country’s sporting success. While several of his teammates from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, and Bihar have acquired government positions, Amardeep has been unable to achieve the same.

He shared his grievances regarding the lack of recognition and employment opportunities with Aaj Tak, revealing that a teammate from Haryana, who served as his captain, had received various benefits from the state government. Amardeep’s appeals for a cash award and government employment have remained unaddressed, leaving him feeling neglected by the authorities.

Family Life and Financial Burdens

Amardeep’s family structure includes his father, mother, and elder brother, all of whom contribute to the household income. His father sells vegetables at the local market, while his mother not only manages the home but also sells vegetables door-to-door, often carrying heavy loads on her head. His elder brother runs a fast-food stall, providing additional financial support to the family.

Amardeep has actively sought assistance from the government since 2016, but to no avail. He recounted how he has had to borrow money to finance his participation in international tournaments. For his trip to Malaysia, he incurred debts amounting to Rs 65,000, with the local throwball association helping to cover approximately half of the cost.

His pursuit of a government job commenced in 2020, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic hampered those efforts. He resumed his job search in 2022 and remains dedicated to finding stable employment while continuing his athletic commitments.

Attention from Officials and Future Prospects

The plight of Amardeep has garnered the attention of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who used social media to highlight the issue. He instructed the sports department to take immediate action regarding Amardeep’s situation. This public recognition has sparked positive responses from state officials.

Sports Minister Sudivya Sonu communicated with Aaj Tak, stating that the government is currently reviewing options to provide Amardeep with employment as per the existing sports policy. Additionally, officials are exploring other potential job opportunities for the athlete to ensure he receives the recognition and support he deserves.

Despite his considerable challenges, Amardeep remains resolute in balancing his work and sporting commitments. He has plans to participate in a tournament in Sri Lanka in late October 2026, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his sport. He continues to persevere, indicating resilience in the face of adversity.
