IIM Ahmedabad Professor Uses Dhurandhar Scene to Make Statistics Lessons More Engaging

The CSR Journal Magazine

An IIM Ahmedabad professor turned an ordinary classroom session into an engaging statistics lesson by incorporating a scene from the 2025 film Dhurandhar. The professor creatively linked concepts of research methodology with dialogues from the movie, fostering a unique learning environment. This event was captured in a video shared on Instagram by Prakhar Singh, a student of the prestigious institute.

Scene Illustrates Statistical Concepts

The context of the Dhurandhar scene featured the character Hamza, portrayed by Ranveer Singh, who is depicted navigating Pakistan’s criminal underworld while conversing with Uzair Baloch, played by Danish Pandor. During this exchange, Baloch elucidates the intricate power dynamics within Pakistan, notably stating that controlling Karachi equates to holding sway over the entire country.

The professor harnessed this cinematic moment to elucidate vital statistical methods such as cluster sampling and stratification, inviting students to consider the real-world applicability of these concepts. The phrase “Win Lyari, win Pakistan” was implicitly related to cluster sampling, a technique where a representative subgroup is analysed to infer conclusions about a broader population.

Furthermore, the distinction made between Baloch and Pathan gangs served as a practical illustration of stratification, where populations are segmented into distinct subgroups for more refined analysis. This method ensures that various demographics are adequately represented in research studies, making the lesson both relevant and relatable.

Viral Reaction on Social Media

This particular instance exemplified how creatively connecting academic principles with contemporary cultural elements can lead to enhanced student engagement. The comments and reactions to Singh’s Instagram post highlighted the growing trend of blending education with entertainment to foster a more stimulating learning atmosphere.

Dhurandhar, recognised as a spy-thriller, explores themes surrounding power struggles, terrorism, and the nuances within Pakistan’s criminal networks. Its sequel, titled Dhurandhar: The Revenge, was released in March, continuing the narrative’s focus on gang rivalries and political influence.
