The CSR Journal Magazine

A second-year student at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Nagpur has tragically died by suicide by allegedly jumping from the ninth floor of his hostel in the early hours of Monday. The police have reported that the student, identified as 20-year-old Shreyash Chandrakant Mane, was experiencing significant stress related to his academic responsibilities. The incident reportedly took place between 4 am and 4:30 am when most students were asleep.

Background on the Victim

Shreyash Mane hailed from Kolhapur and was enrolled in the Computer Science programme at IIIT Nagpur. As final examinations were approaching, reports suggest that he felt overwhelmed by the pressure of unfinished coursework. Colleagues and friends described him as a diligent student, and the stress from impending assessments is believed to have contributed to this tragic incident.

The police have confirmed that no suicide note was found at the scene of the event. Assistant Inspector Nilesh Chaure stated that an accidental death case has been officially registered. Investigations are currently focused on exploring all potential factors that may have influenced Mane’s actions, including personal and academic issues.

Witness reactions from fellow students have highlighted the incident’s emotional impact on the campus community. A considerable number of students gathered soon after news of the tragedy broke, expressing their shock and sorrow over the loss.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mane’s death is ongoing. Authorities have indicated that further insights could emerge from examining the victim’s mobile phone. This examination may provide important information regarding his state of mind prior to the incident and any pressures he faced academically or personally.

In light of the incident, the institute’s administration may consider implementing measures to better support students facing academic pressure. Mental health services and academic counselling might be areas of focus to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Students and staff are advocating for a review of current support systems as the community processes this shocking event. Officials have not yet released detailed strategies for addressing the underlying issues but have acknowledged the urgent need for discussion regarding student wellbeing.
