The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that the state government is utilising helicopters from the Indian Air Force (IAF) to deliver vital relief supplies to those affected by recent floods. This move is intended to reach individuals stranded in severely impacted areas. In a statement made via social media on July 25, 2026, CM Sarma mentioned that the strategies for distributing relief materials are being continuously adapted to ensure effectiveness based on current ground conditions.

CM Sarma noted the necessity of targeted airdrops, aiming to distribute supplies in larger quantities to improve accessibility for the recipients. He highlighted the ongoing situation and affirmed that every effort is being made to alleviate the hardships faced by the flood-affected population. The IAF helicopters are an essential component of the state’s emergency response strategy during this crisis.

Distribution of Essential Supplies

In addition to general relief items, the Assam government is focusing on health needs, particularly for women and children. CM Sarma reported that the distribution of baby food and sanitary pads is currently underway in various affected regions. This initiative aims to address critical health and hygiene requirements among vulnerable groups during the disaster.

The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of these supplies, stating that the well-being of children and women remains a top priority during the ongoing relief operations. Access to basic necessities has been severely compromised, and the state is mobilising resources to tackle these issues swiftly and effectively.

With the extensive infrastructure being deployed, officials anticipate that the airdrop will facilitate immediate access to essential items, thereby improving the situation for those impacted by the floods.

Current Situation and Challenges

The flood situation in Assam has escalated, with the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reporting a rising death toll. As of July 25, 2026, the number of fatalities due to the floods has reached 61, following 14 additional deaths within a 24-hour period. Most of these recent fatalities were recorded in the Charaideo district, with significant losses also reported in Sivasagar and Jorhat.

Amid ongoing relief efforts, Badruddin Ajmal, Chief and MLA of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), called upon authorities to expedite assistance to areas still awaiting relief. He pointed out that hundreds of people are either missing or have been affected, stressing the need for comprehensive coverage of all impacted areas.

The overall situation in Assam remains dire, with more than 7.05 lakh individuals affected across 12 districts, including Golaghat, Dibrugarh, and Sonitpur. Sivasagar has emerged as the worst-hit area, impacting over 3,48,555 residents, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat. Reports indicate that 856 villages and 37 revenue circles have been adversely affected as a result of the ongoing floods.
