Hyderabad Auto Driver Foils Chain-Snatching Bid With Brave Intervention

The CSR Journal Magazine

An auto driver in Hyderabad displayed remarkable bravery by intervening in an alleged chain-snatching incident, successfully halting the suspect by ramming his vehicle into the thief’s scooter. This event took place on May 4 in the Begum Bazaar area near Jinsi Chouraha, falling under the jurisdiction of the Goshamahal Police Station. Eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage portray the tense moments leading up to the intervention. The alleged thief, identified as Mohammed Sohel from Dabeerpura, reportedly attempted to snatch a gold chain from Manju Omlata, who was taking a morning walk with her daughter-in-law near a local school.

Actions Taken by the Auto Driver

The situation escalated quickly as Sohel allegedly attempted to escape after the failed robbery. However, in his haste, he lost control of his scooter and fell to the ground. Mohammed Zaher, the auto driver, observed the unfolding commotion in his side-view mirror after he had initially passed the area. Realising the gravity of the situation, Zaher made a split-second decision to intervene, turning his auto around and pursuing the suspect.

In a decisive move, Zaher rammed his vehicle into the thief’s scooter, causing Sohel to fall off once again and preventing his escape. Despite the immediate danger, the incident did not end there. Reports indicate that the accused apparently retaliated by attacking Zaher with a stick. Nevertheless, Zaher remained resolute, continuing to restrain Sohel until police personnel on patrol arrived at the scene.

After the matter was addressed and the police had taken the alleged robber into custody, Zaher reportedly left the scene quietly, declining any recognition or reward for his act of bravery. His actions would only come to light later when authorities reviewed the CCTV footage and identified him from the vehicle’s registration details.

Recognition and Impact of the Incident

Zaher’s courageous actions did not go unnoticed. V. C. Sajjanar, the Commissioner of Police, later honoured him at the TGICCC in Banjara Hills, awarding him a cash prize along with a certificate in recognition of his extraordinary bravery. The incident has sparked discussions across various platforms, highlighting the significance of public intervention in crime prevention.

Authorities disclosed that Mohammed Sohel, the alleged thief, possesses a criminal history, with around 16 registered cases against him at various police stations, underscoring the severity of the incident. The revelations surrounding Sohel’s background have added to the public’s concern regarding safety and crime in the area.

The CCTV footage from the incident has circulated widely on social media, inspiring many with Zaher’s quick thinking and dedication to keeping his community safe. These developments highlight the critical role civilians can play in crime prevention, acting courageously and selflessly in dangerous situations.
