Hockey India Dismisses U-18 Team Coach Sudhir Golla Amid Misconduct Allegations

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hockey India has dismissed coach Sudhir Golla from the ongoing under-18 national coaching camp in Bhopal due to serious allegations of misconduct. This decision was made following formal complaints lodged by multiple trainees at the Centre of Excellence in Morabadi, Ranchi, regarding Golla’s conduct and alleged negligence of duty.

The complaints led to significant concerns about Golla’s inappropriate behaviour while he was involved in training at the state-run academy. These allegations prompted the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs in Jharkhand to launch a formal inquiry. The investigation aimed to assess the severity of the complaints brought forward by the players.

State Authorities Take Action

This week, state authorities acted swiftly after an initial assessment of the complaints, leading to Golla’s removal from his responsibilities in Jharkhand. He was replaced at the Ranchi facility to ensure the continuity of the training programme without disruption.

However, the situation attracted immediate attention as Golla was still part of the national sub-junior setup in Bhopal, where the under-18 men’s squad was preparing for an upcoming international bilateral series against Australia. His presence in this high-profile camp raised concerns about safeguarding measures within Hockey India.

Hockey India’s Secretary General, Bhola Nath Singh, confirmed to media outlet India Today that the governing body acted promptly once the state-level developments were brought to their attention. He stated, “He was laid off two days back,” confirming the immediate execution of Golla’s removal from the national camp.

Ongoing Issues for Hockey India

This incident underscores a challenging week for Hockey India, heightening public scrutiny on its administrative practices. The federation is currently dealing with mounting backlash from the hockey community. The incident occurs shortly after former goalkeeper PR Sreejesh publicly criticised Hockey India for unceremoniously terminating his position as head coach of the junior men’s team, despite numerous successful finishes.

Golla’s dismissal over serious behavioural allegations starkly contrasts with the complications surrounding Sreejesh’s exit, highlighting ongoing issues within the federation regarding governance and player welfare. Golla’s immediate expulsion raises questions about the adequacy of safeguarding mechanisms, background checks, and the overall management of domestic coaching staff.

Hockey India is now faced with the responsibility of addressing these systemic issues to restore trust and confidence from players, coaches, and the public. As investigations continue, there is an emphasis on ensuring more robust frameworks for protecting the integrity and safety of all individuals involved in the sport.
