In a significant breakthrough, the Gurugram Police’s Cyber Crime Unit has dismantled a gang reportedly involved in scamming individuals by promising to increase their credit card limits. The operation led to the arrest of five suspects who were primarily operating from Delhi. The investigation was initiated following a complaint by a victim, Om Prakash, who claimed he was cheated out of Rs 27,000 after being approached by fraudsters with an enticing offer.

Cracking the Case

During the inquiry, law enforcement officers traced the defrauded amount to a digital wallet registered with Canara Bank. This key development led investigators to Anuj Pal, the individual in whose name the digital wallet was created. Police stated that probing Anuj’s activities helped uncover the identities of other critical members associated with this fraud.

The investigation revealed that Anuj was responsible for setting up bank accounts and digital wallets for the scam. The remaining co-accused, identified as Gaurav, Rahul, and Aanchal, along with another associate, operated a bogus call centre from a rented apartment in Delhi. Their target demographic comprised credit card users whose personal information they exploited.

In a remarkable twist, the accused had a strategy of frequently relocating every 15 to 20 days to avoid detection from law enforcement agencies. According to investigators, the gang utilised stolen or leaked customer data to approach victims and persuade them to divulge sensitive banking information, thus deepening their fraudulent activities.

Police Action and Public Advisory

A recent raid conducted by the Gurugram Cyber Cell in Delhi resulted in the arrests of these five suspects, along with the confiscation of various electronic devices and tools allegedly employed in the fraudulent activities. Authorities have indicated that they seek to place the accused in police custody to further recover additional devices and fully expose the network’s extent.

As the investigation proceeds, police are also looking into the origins of the leaked customer data, attempting to pinpoint the primary supplier of the credit card users’ information. This case serves as an essential reminder for the public to exercise caution regarding unsolicited calls related to banking services.

Officials have reiterated that banks never request customers to share One-Time Passwords (OTPs), card details, or other confidential financial information over the phone.
