Gujarat has been recognised for its outstanding contributions to the horticulture sector by receiving the Agriculture Leadership Award-2026 at the 17th Agriculture Leadership Conclave, held in New Delhi. This event showcased the state’s commitment to agricultural development and innovation.

The award was presented by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, with Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde also in attendance. Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani accepted the accolade on behalf of the Gujarat Government, marking a significant achievement for the state’s agricultural community.

The Agriculture Today Group, which initiated these awards in 2008 under the guidance of renowned agricultural scientist Dr M. S. Swaminathan, aims to bolster dialogue among stakeholders in the agriculture sector. The selection committee, led by former Chief Justice of India Justice P. Sathasivam, underscores the award’s integrity and significance.

Innovative Initiatives Highlighted

During his acceptance speech, Minister Jitu Vaghani attributed the state’s recognition to its innovative approaches to horticulture. He emphasised that this honour represents not only the efforts of the government but also the dedication of Gujarat’s farmers and the Agriculture Department personnel working diligently in the field.

Vaghani further acknowledged the legacy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who previously served as Gujarat’s Chief Minister. Under his leadership, the state received the Agriculture Leadership Award for being the Best Agriculture State in both 2009 and 2014. The transformative initiatives during this time, such as Krushi Mahotsav, Soil Health Card programme, and advancements in drip irrigation, significantly boosted agricultural productivity.

Gujarat’s agricultural growth rate reached 9.9 per cent during the Tenth Five-Year Plan, underlining the effectiveness of these initiatives. Additionally, the state was recognised again as the Best Agriculture State in 2018 and received accolades for excellence in animal husbandry in 2019.

Recognition as a Milestone

The recent award marks Gujarat’s return to the spotlight after seven years, this time honouring its achievements in horticulture. Vaghani expressed that this recognition serves as a pivotal milestone for the state, setting a foundation for future advancements in agriculture.

At the ceremony, several distinguished dignitaries, including Rajnath Singh, Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde, and Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi, commended Gujarat for its progressive agricultural policies. The acknowledgment from such prominent figures reflects the commendable efforts made by the state in strengthening its agricultural base.

The Agriculture Leadership Award-2026 serves not only as a recognition of past achievements but also as an inspiration for Gujarat to continue setting high standards in the sector. This accolade positions the state well to establish further benchmarks and spur innovation within agriculture.
