Gujarat’s Mosquito-Borne Disease Drive Delivers Major Reduction in Cases

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gujarat’s recent public health campaign has reportedly led to a considerable decline in cases of malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the Government of Gujarat has prioritised disease prevention, timely diagnosis, and effective treatment. The state has strengthened its surveillance, testing, treatment processes, and mosquito control measures aimed at combating these diseases.

According to data released on World Mosquito Day, there has been a 45 per cent reduction in malaria cases and a 39.1 per cent drop in dengue cases as of Week 33 of 2026, compared to the same time last year. The decline in chikungunya cases stands at 48.1 per cent. This initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to enhancing public health standards.

During this period, over 1 crore blood samples were tested in 2025, leading to the identification of 1,407 malaria cases. In 2026, the number of blood samples tested exceeded 1.11 crore, resulting in a significant decrease to 774 malaria cases.

Diagnostic Improvements and Healthcare Accessibility

The state has made notable advancements in its testing infrastructure, ensuring prompt detection and treatment of diseases. As part of this initiative, diagnostic centres for dengue and chikungunya have been established in 42 hospitals associated with medical colleges. By Week 33 of 2026, these centres had processed over 83,000 serum samples for dengue and more than 12,000 for chikungunya, totalling nearly 96,000 tested samples for both diseases.

To prevent mosquito-borne ailments, the Government of Gujarat has implemented extensive surveillance efforts. During the first phase of a house-to-house campaign from April 27 to May 6, 2026, 89 per cent coverage was achieved through fever surveillance and anti-larval measures, in addition to health education outreach.

The second phase of this campaign took place from July 1 to July 10, during which 19,558 teams monitored over 6.51 crore individuals. More than 2,57,000 blood samples were collected, with 28 malaria patients identified and provided with appropriate treatment, demonstrating the effectiveness of the state’s health initiatives.

Efforts to Eliminate Mosquito Breeding Sites

The Government of Gujarat’s extensive campaign is not limited to controlling existing diseases but also focuses on preventing mosquito breeding. During house-to-house surveillance, over 29.63 lakh breeding sites have been eradicated statewide. Furthermore, fogging operations were conducted across more than 3,21,000 households to eliminate mosquito populations.

In an effort to enhance community safety, over 1 lakh residents in 116 villages across 24 districts sensitive to malaria have received insecticide spraying during the first round. The second round commenced on August 1, 2026. Additionally, the state has deployed 497 vector control teams across various districts and municipal corporations to intensify fever surveillance and anti-larval tasks during the monsoon period.

Efforts to manage mosquito larvae also include the release of larvivorous fish at 5,024 permanent waterlogging sites across Gujarat by the end of July 2026. This proactive measure aims to control mosquito breeding early on. The administration has ensured ample availability of necessary medicines, larvicides, and essential equipment while continuously monitoring the status of vector-borne diseases at daily, weekly, and monthly intervals.
