Government Denies Reports Of E25 Petrol Rollout

The CSR Journal Magazine

The government has refuted claims regarding the immediate rollout of E25 petrol, stating there is no current proposal under consideration. Sources indicated that testing is ongoing, and a formal policy decision has yet to be made. They emphasised that the existing E20 petrol programme continues without any concerns for the public. Ethanol-blended fuel has been utilised across the country for over two-and-a-half years following extensive evaluations.

Officials clarified that the current approach to ethanol blending has adhered to a meticulously developed and scientifically assessed strategy rather than a hasty policy adjustment. Such a structured approach aims to ensure the safe integration of ethanol into the fuel system.

Details On Ongoing Testing

According to the government sources, compatibility testing for E25 fuel is still in progress among various automobile manufacturers and vehicle models. These tests are critical to assess how different vehicles will perform with higher ethanol content. The government has not yet received conclusive test reports, and no decision on E25’s introduction will occur until all evaluations are complete.

Officials reiterated that any future increase in the ethanol blending percentage will solely rely on scientific findings related to vehicle safety, performance, and long-term durability. They emphasised the importance of ensuring that all modifications are backed by solid evidence before implementation.

The planned rollout for higher ethanol blends is carefully timed, with E15 blending initiated in April 2023, followed by E19 in April 2024 and E20 in April 2025. Each stage of this rollout was introduced exclusively after detailed discussions with automotive manufacturers, oil marketing companies, and technical experts.

Current Adoption Of Ethanol-Blended Petrol

The government reported that ethanol-blended petrol is currently being used by nearly 20 crore two-wheelers and around 20 lakh four-wheelers across India. This widespread usage reflects a significant expansion of the programme, asserting that it has grown without major technical issues. Officials maintained that a gradual and well-planned approach has characterised the programme from its inception.

Government sources underscored the importance of thorough technical studies prior to launching the blending programme. Collaborations with vehicle manufacturers, fuel companies, and technical experts have been vital in facilitating this integration smoothly and securely.

Despite rising speculation around higher ethanol blends, the government urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculative reports. They expressed that the current methodology for transitioning to ethanol blends is supported by scientific validation. Any potential shift towards higher blending will be undertaken only after comprehensive studies and regulatory approvals.

Misinformation Allegations Surrounding Ethanol Blending

The clarification from the government coincides with growing unease surrounding the compatibility of existing vehicles with higher ethanol ratios. Government sources suggested that the spread of misinformation regarding ethanol blending could be an effort to undermine India’s initiative towards improved energy security. They speculated that it might be part of an “international conspiracy” aimed at maintaining India’s dependence on imported crude oil.

Officials highlighted that India remains one of the fastest-growing markets for crude oil globally, making the enhancement of domestic ethanol production a pivotal aspect of the nation’s long-term energy plan. They reaffirmed that advancements in ethanol blending will be made based on scientific assessments and technical validations.

The authorities assured that any steps to increase blending levels will happen only after thorough evaluations and testing are fully realised, maintaining a commitment to both safety and performance standards in fuel usage.
