Global South Seeks Partnership, Not Assistance: PM Modi at G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Global South is seeking meaningful partnerships rather than assistance, asserting that developing countries want to become active participants in global development instead of remaining mere beneficiaries.

Addressing the Outreach Session on “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity” at the 52nd G7 Summit in Évian, France, the Prime Minister called for a more inclusive framework of international cooperation based on equality, dignity and shared responsibility.

PM Modi Calls for Equal Partnerships

Stressing the aspirations of developing nations, PM Modi said the Global South has high expectations from the international community but is not looking for aid.

“Today, the Global South has high expectations from the international community. However, what they seek is not assistance, but partnership. They do not wish to remain beneficiaries of global development; they want to become participants in it,” the Prime Minister said.

He emphasised the need to move beyond the traditional donor-recipient model and work together as equal partners in pursuit of common goals.

‘Partnership Must Be Based on Dignity’

The Prime Minister said countries must walk together rather than merely alongside one another, adding that international partnerships should be rooted in dignity instead of dependency.

“We must move beyond the donor-recipient mindset and work as equal partners. We must walk together, not merely alongside one another. Partnerships must be associated with dignity rather than dependency. Through such efforts, we can lay a strong foundation for sustainable development for future generations,” he said.

PM Modi also underlined the importance of collective action in addressing global challenges and ensuring sustainable development for future generations.

Dialogue and Diplomacy Key to Resolving Conflicts

Reiterating India’s position on international disputes, the Prime Minister said tensions and conflicts around the world can only be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation.

“International partnerships and global solidarity can become meaningful only when we collectively address shared challenges. India firmly believes that the lasting resolution of tensions and conflicts in different parts of the world can only be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy, and international cooperation,” he said.

The remarks come amid continuing geopolitical tensions and renewed efforts by world powers to promote peace and stability.

PM Modi Welcomes Progress in West Asia Peace Efforts

Referring to developments in West Asia, PM Modi welcomed progress made towards peace in the region, including the Iran-US peace deal, while highlighting the consequences of the conflict.

The Prime Minister said the crisis had resulted in loss of life and property in several friendly countries and had disrupted maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz, affecting the global economy.

He also noted that several Indian civilians had lost their lives due to the conflict and stressed the need for greater international efforts to preserve peace.

Calls for Secure Maritime Routes

PM Modi highlighted the importance of safeguarding global maritime trade and ensuring the safety of seafarers, who play a crucial role in connecting countries.

“Ensuring the safety of seafarers, who connect nations through global maritime trade, is our collective responsibility. We must ensure that sea routes remain secure and that seafarers can carry out their duties without fear,” he said.

The Prime Minister underscored that uninterrupted maritime connectivity is vital for the global economy and international commerce.

India Ready to Work With Global Partners

Reaffirming India’s commitment to international cooperation, PM Modi said the country remains prepared to work with all partners to address common global challenges.

“India stands fully prepared to work with all its partners on these important issues,” he said.

PM Modi arrived in the French city earlier on Tuesday following an invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron. India’s participation in the summit marks its 13th appearance as a partner nation at the G7 grouping.
