Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Criticises Congress Over Vande Mataram Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has expressed her support for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent comments regarding the Vande Mataram controversy. On August 17, 2026, Gupta remarked that the Congress party has become self-centred, alleging that its leaders feel no remorse for insulting the national song. Her statements followed Shah’s accusations against Congress, specifically targeting the actions of party leader Sonia Gandhi.

During a press briefing, CM Gupta condemned the interruption of Vande Mataram’s full rendition, describing it as an affront to the nation. She asserted that the Congress party, which has historically portrayed itself as a primary contributor to India’s independence, has lost sight of the true essence of freedom and national dignity.

CM called for an apology from the Congress, stating that the group’s leaders regard themselves as self-styled sovereigns. She indicated that their actions represent an insult to the national flag and anthem, suggesting that every Indian would perceive this as a direct affront. The Chief Minister emphasised the need for Congress to offer a public apology to the citizens for the incident involving Vande Mataram.

Amit Shah’s Accusations and Controversy Background

The backdrop to this situation arose during an event held at the Congress headquarters on Independence Day, where visuals revealed senior party officials reportedly conversing while Vande Mataram was being performed. Amit Shah, addressing a public gathering, accused Congress of shamelessness concerning this matter.

Shah claimed that Sonia Gandhi ordered the interruption of the national song mid-way through its performance. He pointed out that this incident was observed by millions via television, thereby exemplifying a significant lapse in respect for the national anthem by Congress leaders. He asserted that the action of not allowing the anthem to be completed represented a grave sin against the nation’s heritage.

Furthermore, Shah urged Congress members to feel ashamed about their conduct, reinforcing the idea that the interruption had broader repercussions on the national sentiment. His remarks have gained considerable traction within political circles, further fuelling the ongoing debate over the congress’s behaviour during the event.

Congress Party’s Response and Clarification

Amid the growing controversy, the Congress party has defended its actions at the Independence Day event. The party insists that Sonia Gandhi’s gestures were unrelated to the performance of the national song. They have affirmed that her focus was solely on ensuring appropriate arrangements for the rendition.

The party’s representatives clarified that while Vande Mataram was indeed recited in full, any perceived interruptions were merely attempts to manage logistics and not reflective of a disrespect towards the national anthem. Congress has strongly rejected the allegations made by BJP leaders, terming them misleading and an attempt to divert attention from substantive issues.

The situation remains tense as political factions continue to trade accusations over this sensitive topic, with BJP leaders maintaining their stance on the supposed insult towards Vande Mataram, and Congress asserting that the matter is being exaggerated for political gain.
