Gen Z Balances Wellness Awareness with Rising Health Challenges, Mirrors Millennial Trends

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gen Z appears to have a strong grasp on various aspects of wellness, as evidenced by social media trends. They engage with fitness applications, monitor their sleep patterns, and openly discuss mental health issues. This generation has adopted health-conscious habits, such as carrying large water bottles and actively engaging in conversations about gut health and stress management.

In contrast, Millennials are often viewed through the lens of being overworked and exhausted, relying heavily on caffeine and grappling with issues like back pain. However, experts suggest that this distinction oversimplifies a more nuanced reality regarding both generations’ health awareness and outcomes.

Health Awareness Versus Actual Outcomes

Prof P Manokar, a Senior Interventional Cardiologist and Clinical Lead at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai, argues that while Gen Z is more informed about mental health matters, Millennials might be taking better physical health initiatives. He describes Gen Z as the “awareness generation,” highlighting their emphasis on preventive care.

Nonetheless, this heightened awareness does not guarantee improved health results. Communities and individuals who are well-informed may still face considerable challenges in translating knowledge into healthier lifestyles. Doctors have noted a concerning trend where Gen Z is experiencing more health-related issues, despite their apparent health consciousness.

Dr. Vivian Kapil, a Consultant Psychiatrist at SRM Prime Hospital in Chennai, notes that Gen Z’s understanding of health encompasses more than physical fitness. They focus on aspects like emotional wellbeing and preventive health, signalling a shift from the previous generational focus on appearance and weight loss.

Physical and Mental Health Trends

Both Gen Z and Millennials are exhibiting alarming physical health issues traditionally associated with older age groups. Conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and even heart attacks are starting to present in individuals aged between 30 to 40, a trend highlighted by Dr. Ravikiran Muthuswamy, a Senior Consultant in Endocrinology at SIMS Hospital.

Moreover, Gen Z’s continuous engagement with digital technology has contributed to an alarming rise in mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and burnout. A report by the American Psychological Association in 2023 noted that Gen Z adults reported the highest levels of mental distress compared to other generations.

Recent studies revealed a significant increase in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) prevalence among young adults aged 20-39. A ten-year examination indicated that rates had grown by 36 per cent, with alarming increases in incidence rates. This data suggests that younger populations face modern lifestyle challenges that may lead to serious health complications.

Generational Differences in Coping Mechanisms

Clinicians observe that Gen Z is notably more willing to discuss mental health compared to Millennials. This trend has resulted in greater visibility and understanding of mental health issues. While there may be higher reported instances of mental distress within this generation, it is crucial to acknowledge that these advancements in dialogue can lead to earlier diagnoses and treatment.

Dr. Manokar also remarks on the generational differences in coping strategies. While Millennials often engage in nostalgia as a form of stress relief, Gen Z has adopted new behaviours, such as “doomscrolling,” which may exacerbate stress and lead to an increased feeling of pressure.

As society becomes increasingly aware of mental health, it is important to remember that knowledge of wellness does not inherently equate to healthier living. Awareness alone is insufficient for fostering long-term health improvement. Overall, the health outcomes for Gen Z versus Millennials remain a topic of ongoing investigation.
