Gautam Adani to Lead Landmark Rural Vision Care Initiative in Bihar

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, is set to lead the ground-breaking ceremony for a major rural vision care initiative in Bihar on Sunday. The programme, being developed in partnership with Adani Foundation and Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital, aims to create one of India’s most extensive rural vision care and healthcare skilling ecosystems.

The ceremony will take place in Mastichak, nearly 70 kilometres from Patna, and is expected to mark a major milestone in affordable healthcare expansion across northern and central India.

Focus on Affordable Treatment and Healthcare Skilling

The proposed initiative seeks to strengthen access to affordable eye treatment, screenings, surgeries and healthcare training in underserved communities. Once completed, the expanded Mastichak ecosystem is expected to emerge as one of the world’s largest rural vision care networks, improving last-mile healthcare delivery for economically vulnerable populations.

Blindness continues to remain one of India’s most preventable public health challenges, especially in rural regions where access to specialised care is limited. Organisers believe the initiative could potentially benefit crores of underprivileged people through enhanced outreach programmes and treatment facilities.

Inspired by “Seva Hi Saadhna Hai”

The programme is also being positioned as an extension of Mr Adani’s philosophy of “Seva Hi Saadhna Hai” — service as the highest form of worship. Over recent years, the Adani Group has increasingly focused on social infrastructure and community development alongside its business expansion.

In 2022, the Adani family announced a ₹60,000 crore commitment towards healthcare, education and skill development initiatives across India. Earlier this year, the family also pledged an additional ₹10,000 crore towards similar social initiatives during the wedding celebrations of Mr Jeet Adani.

The Group has also undertaken several large-scale outreach efforts, including support services for millions of pilgrims during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj and food distribution drives during the Rath Yatra in Odisha.

Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital’s Growing Legacy

Founded in 2005 as a 30-bed facility in rural Bihar, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital has grown into one of India’s leading eye care institutions. The hospital has conducted over 14 lakh sight-restoring surgeries and millions of eye screenings over the years.

The initiative also builds upon the expanding Vision Care Programme run by the Adani Foundation. Since its launch in 2024, the programme has conducted nearly 1.93 lakh eye screenings and provided prescription eyeglasses to around 59,000 beneficiaries across 11 states through rural outreach and school screening programmes.

With Bihar emerging as a key focus area for the Adani Group’s infrastructure and community initiatives, Sunday’s event is expected to draw attention from business, healthcare and public policy circles alike.
