G7 Summit: PM Modi Raises Concerns Over Indian Lives Lost in Hormuz Disruptions

The CSR Journal Magazine

During his address at the G7 leaders’ meeting in Evian, France, on June 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern regarding the tragic deaths of Indian seafarers resulting from a recent US military strike. Seated next to US President Donald Trump, Modi articulated the significant human and economic repercussions caused by the instability in the Strait of Hormuz.

Emphasising the importance of maintaining secure maritime trade routes, Modi remarked on the adverse effects of disruptions in this vital shipping lane on the global economy. “We welcome the progress made in peace efforts in West Asia,” he stated, while also acknowledging the conflict’s severe impact on life and property in the region.

During this high-profile session, titled “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity,” he highlighted that several Indian civilians had lost their lives and affirmed that the safety of seafarers is a shared responsibility.

Recent Maritime Incident in the Gulf of Oman

The Prime Minister’s remarks follow a recent incident in the Gulf of Oman, where three Indian nationals tragically lost their lives after US forces targeted the Palau-flagged oil tanker Settebello. The vessel was said to be operating with a 28-member crew that included 24 Indians, two Pakistanis, one Ukrainian, and one Russian.

According to reports, the Settebello was intercepted and struck by US military forces over an alleged violation of a blockade while transporting oil from Iran. This incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of vessels operating in this strategically important region.

The Settebello is part of a troubling trend, as it is one of three merchant vessels featuring Indian crew members that have encountered issues amidst rising regional maritime tension. The situation highlights the vulnerability of Indian nationals working in international waters and the increasing risks they face.

Importance of Maritime Security

In light of these recent events, Modi’s statements serve as a reminder of the critical need for enhanced maritime security. The Strait of Hormuz is recognised as a pivotal chokepoint, essential for the transportation of a substantial volume of global energy and commercial cargo. Any instability in this area poses risks not just to regional players but to the worldwide economy.

The Prime Minister’s call to action seeks to ensure that maritime routes remain secure, enabling seafarers to perform their duties without fear for their lives. He called upon G7 nations to actively participate in safeguarding these vital trade routes and supporting the global maritime community.

As the world navigates these complex geopolitical challenges, Modi’s intervention underscores India’s commitment to international maritime safety and highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring secure maritime operations across the globe.
