FSSAI Issues Notice to IRCTC Over Video of Staff Washing Utensils in Train Toilet

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an official notice to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) in response to a viral video reportedly showing catering staff washing utensils in a train toilet. This action took place on May 28, after social media began circulating the video, which allegedly depicted contracted personnel engaged in onboard catering services for Train No. 12223 (LTT ERS Duronto Express) engaged in unhygienic practices.

Contravention of Hygiene Standards

The FSSAI’s notice indicates that the actions observed in the video directly breach the hygiene and sanitary requirements established under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011. The regulations stipulate that food business operators must adhere to safe processing, handling, washing, and cleaning practices to avoid any possible contamination of food and related surfaces.

The authority has expressed that such practices not only endanger public health but also undermine the quality of catering services provided to railway passengers. There are valid concerns surrounding the potential for foodborne illnesses and the overall integrity of food management in train services.

In light of this incident, the FSSAI has also advised the IRCTC to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure adherence to the mandatory guidelines and regulations governing food safety practices. The procedural integrity of onboard catering services is paramount in maintaining public trust in railway meal services.

Future Actions Pending IRCTC Response

The FSSAI has indicated that further actions will be predicated on the IRCTC’s forthcoming response to the issued notice. The regulatory body has made it clear that it expects the IRCTC to take this matter seriously and to implement corrective measures as necessary.

As the situation develops, the IRCTC is likely to outline its steps to address the concerns raised in the notice. It has become crucial for the corporation to reaffirm its commitment to maintaining hygiene standards, particularly given the public reliance on its catering services during railway travel.

The viral nature of the video has heightened public attention, putting increasing pressure on the IRCTC to provide satisfactory clarifications and ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future. This case serves as a significant reminder of the importance of adhering to food safety regulations in all aspects of catering services.
