From Viral Sit-Ups to Resignation: UP IAS Officer Rinku Singh Rahi Quits Alleges Being Sidelined

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rinku Singh Rahi, an IAS officer from the 2022 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has submitted his resignation, drawing attention due to a viral video that captured him performing sit-ups on his first day at work. Rahi has expressed that he feels sidelined and has not been provided with sufficient opportunities to actively engage in his role. He had been assigned to the Revenue Council for an extended period.

Concerns Regarding Administrative Engagement

In his resignation letter, Rahi has claimed that he was denied any meaningful work and described the existence of a “parallel system” operating alongside the constitutional framework. He expressed his concerns about lacking the opportunity to contribute to public service, labeling his resignation as a moral decision rather than a strategic one.

Viral Attention from a Simultaneous Inspection

Rahi’s rise to fame took place in July 2025 when he took on the role of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Shahjahanpur. During an inspection, he encountered a situation involving littering and individuals urinating in public areas, leading to tension with local lawyers. In an unusual effort to address the situation, Rahi publicly performed sit-ups as a form of punishment to emphasize accountability, an act that was perceived as a demonstration of equality before the law. This incident quickly went viral, which later resulted in his transfer to the Revenue Council by the state government.

Background of Challenge and Courage

Rahi’s career has been marked by both challenges and notable achievements. In 2009, while serving as a Social Welfare Officer in Muzaffarnagar, he uncovered a significant corruption case involving an alleged scam of Rs 83 crore. Following this revelation, he was attacked and sustained multiple gunshot wounds, leading to serious facial injuries. Despite these setbacks, he has continued his career in public service, earning respect for his integrity and resilience through various postings.

Advocacy for Accountability in Governance

Throughout his career, Rahi has maintained that accountability within governance is crucial, asserting that punishing wrongdoing should act as a deterrent. His commitment to these principles has been evident in his professional conduct and actions, which he exemplified further during his controversial first-day incident. Before entering the Indian Administrative Service, Rahi served in state civil services and successfully cleared the UPSC examination while working in that capacity.
