Fresh Complaints Filed Against Abhishek Banerjee Over Provocative Remarks in Siliguri

The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, is facing increasing legal challenges as a new complaint has been registered against him in Siliguri. This complaint alleges that Banerjee made provocative comments during the election campaign for the 2026 elections. Sanjay Kumar Singhal, a businessman and former president of the Siliguri Merchant Association, submitted a written complaint to the cyber police division of the Siliguri Police Commissionerate. Singhal’s assertion is that Banerjee’s speeches, along with video content circulated through social media, risked inciting panic and political unrest among the public.

Details of the Allegations

The written complaint highlighted several instances where Banerjee allegedly made statements that could be interpreted as unlawful. Specific events referenced include a rally held in Nandigram on March 25, 2026, a public meeting and roadshow at Maheshtala on April 27, 2026, and an election rally in Arambagh. Singhal claimed that these speeches encompassed remarks that contradicted legal norms. He expressed concern over an elected Member of Parliament engaging in such conduct, questioning the implications of Banerjee’s provocative comments, particularly one made on May 4 where he mentioned the Union Home Minister’s name.

In his statements to the media, Singhal underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that an individual who perceives themselves as powerful might openly confront senior government officials. He commented on the Election Commission’s critical role in ensuring that elections are conducted without fear, raising doubts about the viability of such an election given the climate of tension stemming from Banerjee’s remarks.

CID Summons and Banerjee’s Response

On the same day as the complaint was filed, a team from West Bengal’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) visited Banerjee’s home to deliver a notice summoning him regarding his alleged incendiary remarks. The CID has taken over the investigation following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) against him at the Bidhanagar Commissionerate. After waiting for several hours outside Banerjee’s residence, he eventually came out to accept the notice.

Reacting to the situation, Banerjee questioned why he was facing legal actions for statements regarding the playing of DJs after May 4, while no such action was taken against a counter-statement made by Amit Shah, which allegedly threatened TMC workers. He highlighted the apparent hypocrisy in the differing treatment of political figures by law enforcement, expressing his commitment to challenge what he described as an inequity in the legal proceedings.

Banerjee asserted that he would pursue judicial action to contest the disparities in the charges brought against him, particularly noting that when Amit Shah made a contentious statement, the Election Commission did not take concurrent action. He argued that the recent political shift in West Bengal has led to renewed legal scrutiny of his actions, suggesting that it marked a shift in the political landscape and its implications for the electoral process.
