French Tourist Amazed by India’s Ubiquitous QR Code Payment Culture

The CSR Journal Magazine

A French traveller’s experience reveals the extensive use of QR codes in India, highlighting the country’s digital payment integration. As UPI celebrates its tenth anniversary, Manika, a content creator who aids French tourists in exploring India, took to Instagram to share her insights. Though previously aware of India’s digital payment system, she found its pervasive presence across various locales to be surprising.

Manika emphasised that her knowledge of UPI did not fully prepare her for the reality she encountered. “One thing I NEVER expected to discover in India,” she commented. Her posts indicated that digital payments are deeply woven into the fabric of daily activities, especially in places not typically known for tech adoption.

Everyday Digital Transactions Transformative Experience

What stood out to her was the presence of QR codes in modest environments; they were not confined to urban centres or upscale venues. Rather, they were found at street-food stalls, local markets, cafés, and rickshaws. “It’s not just in big cities or fancy places,” she remarked, noting the QR code’s role in simplifying transactions in everyday settings.

Manika’s observation illustrates a cultural divergence from France, where cash and card payments are commonplace. In India, the convenience of scanning a code to buy a Rs 20 snack or pay for a short rickshaw trip exemplifies a different approach to financial transactions. “Wow, I really didn’t expect this,” she reflected on the unexpected cultural nuances she discovered.

The experience underscores the significant advancements India has made in digital payments, facilitating instantaneous transactions across varied economic contexts. Manika’s insights provide visitors with a fresh perspective on how technology has reshaped India’s financial landscape.

Celebrating a Decade of UPI Integration

As UPI reaches its tenth anniversary, having been launched in August 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), it continues to evolve as a key component of India’s economic infrastructure. Initially designed as a digital payment solution, it has grown to be entrenched in everyday consumer behaviour throughout the country.

For many Indians, using QR codes for every type of transaction, from ordering tea to hailing an auto-rickshaw, is now a common practice. However, for tourists like Manika, witnessing this technology’s dual usage in both luxurious establishments and small roadside vendors can provide a unique viewpoint on the dynamics of India’s digital economy.

In conclusion, Manika’s encounter with QR codes illustrated a significant cultural difference that goes unnoticed by locals. As the nation progresses towards a more digitally inclusive society, such firsthand accounts can greatly enrich the understanding of India’s modern financial practices.
