French Banker Sentenced to 25 Years for Years-Long Torture and Rape of Former Partner

A French bank manager has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the prolonged torture and rape of his former girlfriend, Laetitia R. This abuse reportedly spanned seven years and involved forcing her into sexual acts with strangers he recruited online. According to Laetitia, 42, and a mother of four, the perpetrator, 51-year-old Guillaume Bucci, applied the facade of sadomasochistic sex games to manipulate her into compliance with his demands.

The court heard harrowing details of Laetitia’s ordeal, particularly an incident on Christmas Eve in 2015 when Bucci instructed her to go to a highway service station to “offer herself to strangers” while he listened via phone. This marked the beginning of a cycle where she was allegedly coerced into prostitution, selling sexual services to various clients, including friends and colleagues. In her testimony, Laetitia stated that she “stopped counting at 487 men.”

Laetitia’s decision to hold a public trial was influenced by the case of Gisele Pelicot, a 72-year-old French woman who became a feminist figure after her public trial led to her husband and multiple associates being convicted of drugging and raping her. Laetitia felt public exposure would shed light on her suffering, contrasting with the more secretive approach Bucci had requested for his own trial.

Harrowing Testimony Reveals Impact of Abuse

During the trial, Laetitia described enduring extreme psychological control and manipulation from Bucci, stating that she lived in “constant fear” from 2015 until 2022. Her experience was marked by what she termed “pure and simple violence” that significantly impacted her mental and physical well-being.

Laetitia recounted the degrading rituals she was forced to undergo, such as being required to drink Bucci’s urine and lick public toilets. One of the most traumatic events reportedly occurred just a day after she was discharged from the hospital following the birth of their daughter; she was coerced into performing a sexual act on a truck driver. With tears in her eyes, Laetitia expressed, “I felt like I was dying inside,” emphasising how each imposed act fractured her spirit further.

Bucci, while admitting to several acts of violence including strangulation and burning, insisted these were “consensual sexual games.” He contended that he did not believe he was inflicting harm upon Laetitia and argued that the sexual acts were consensual. Nonetheless, evidence presented by prosecutors included text and voice messages where Bucci threatened her life if she failed to comply, indicating that her actions were under duress.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Prosecutors sought a life sentence for Bucci, highlighting the serious risk he posed to other women. They emphasised his history of violent behaviour and the psychological trauma inflicted on Laetitia. However, the court ultimately sentenced him to 25 years, ruling that he must serve at least two-thirds of that time before he could be considered for parole.

This sentencing brings to light the ongoing issues surrounding domestic violence and the legal system’s handling of such cases in France. The case underscores the need for continued advocacy for victims, ensuring their voices are heard in the pursuit of justice against abusers.

As the trial concludes, Laetitia’s testimony serves as a reminder of the resilience of survivors and the importance of addressing the complexities of consent within abusive relationships. The case is likely to have lasting implications for discussions about accountability and support for victims in similar situations.
