Formula One Set to Return to India as Sports Minister Proposes Special Task Force

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s prospects of reinstating Formula One have progressed positively, as Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has declared intentions to form a specialised Task Force. This initiative aims to assess the feasibility of hosting significant motorsport events, particularly focusing on the potential for a Grand Prix in India by 2028. The proposal emerges amid a noticeable increase in motorsport enthusiasm across the nation, with a growing fanbase for Formula One.

Goals and Structure of the Task Force

In his statement to selected media on Saturday, Mandaviya outlined that the Task Force will comprise four to five members who will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of India’s motorsports landscape. The team will explore the various challenges present in the sector and identify essential measures for its long-term growth. This includes assessing the economic, tourism, and investment opportunities linked to hosting major motorsport events in India.

Committee representation is planned to encompass individuals from the Sports Ministry, the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), the Uttar Pradesh government, and owners of the Buddh International Circuit. Although no precise timeline was provided, Mandaviya indicated that the Task Force would be established promptly, with a three-month period allocated to submit its findings.

The expert committee’s recommendations will be instrumental in shaping a broader policy framework for the promotion of motorsport within India. According to Mandaviya, producing a conducive environment for motorsports is a priority that reflects the government’s ambitions in the sporting sector.

Timeline and Focus on Grassroots Development

Mandaviya has expressed the government’s objective to lay down a necessary framework by next year, paving the way for the return of Formula One to India by 2028, a shift from an earlier target of 2027. He has highlighted the significance of developing grassroots motorsport infrastructure alongside efforts to draw international events to the country. There is an anticipated push for fostering regional motorsport initiatives concurrent with the higher-profile events.

During his address, the minister emphasised the commercial potential of Formula One as a crucial element of the government’s ‘Play in India’ initiative. He remarked on the scope for an entire economy to develop around Formula One in India, given the substantial and growing fanbase the sport enjoys.

India formerly hosted Formula One races at the Buddh International Circuit from 2011 to 2013 but lost the event due to taxation and financial issues that plagued the organisers. The recent movement to revive interest follows a meeting that included Formula One officials, stakeholders from the Buddh International Circuit, the Adani Group, and motorsport enthusiasts, illustrating a collective ambition to reinstate the event.

Growing Fanbase and Future Prospects

Recent statistics indicate a promising situation for the sport in India, with Formula One’s audience having surged from 79 million in December to 98 million within six months, suggesting a burgeoning affinity for motorsport among the Indian populace. This trend may strengthen the case for reinstating the Indian Grand Prix in the future.

Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali has previously acknowledged the increasing significance of the Indian market, contending that any potential return necessitates appropriate investment and unwavering commitment from all relevant parties involved. The outlook appears positive, as both the government and various stakeholders align their efforts to rejuvenate motorsports in India.
