Former Jharkhand Minister Mannan Mallick Passes Away at Age 83

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former senior Congress leader and Jharkhand Minister Mannan Mallick died in a hospital in Ranchi on Tuesday, as confirmed by a hospital official. He was 83 years old and had been struggling with a pulmonary disease. Mallick, who served as an MLA representing Dhanbad, was a significant figure in the political landscape of Jharkhand for over two decades.

Mallick joined politics in the early years of Jharkhand’s formation. He won the Dhanbad Assembly seat in 2009, defeating BJP candidate Raj Sinha by a narrow margin of 890 votes. His victory marked the beginning of his influential role in the state’s politics. He later assumed the position of Minister for Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, and Disaster Management.

During his political journey, Mallick contested Assembly elections in 2014 and 2019, although he faced defeat against Sinha in both instances. Despite this, his contribution to public service and social causes remained unwavering throughout his career.

Tributes and Condolences from Political Leaders

Mallick’s death elicited heartfelt tributes from various political leaders across Jharkhand. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, acknowledging his contribution to the state, noted that Mallick had raised the voice of the people, particularly for those in Dhanbad. Soren expressed that with Mallick’s passing, Jharkhand had lost a significant representative committed to social issues.

Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato also paid homage to Mallick, describing his loss as an irreparable void in Jharkhand’s political sphere. Mahato emphasised Mallick’s dedication to public service and his efforts to advocate for the people’s concerns throughout his career.

Senior Congress leader Rajesh Thakur echoed similar sentiments, stating that Mallick devoted his life to social harmony and democratic principles. Thakur remarked that Mallick’s simplicity and integrity had carved a unique space for him in Jharkhand’s politics and acknowledged his passing as a loss not only to the Congress party but to the entire state.

Controversies Surrounding His Political Journey

Despite his lengthy political career, Mallick was not without controversy. On July 10, a special MPMLA court in Dhanbad convicted 30 individuals, including Mallick, related to the 2011 Matkuria firing case. The incident, which occurred during a police operation to remove unauthorised structures from BCCL land, led to violence, resulting in four fatalities and injuries to several police personnel.

This case, while controversial, did not overshadow the largely positive contributions he made during his decades-long service. Mallick’s political journey was marked by challenges, but his commitment to his constituents remained prominent throughout his tenure.

The political landscape of Jharkhand reflects on Mallick’s legacy as leaders remember his dedication to public service, his advocacy for the people, and his involvement in legislative affairs. His political narrative serves as a significant chapter in Jharkhand’s ongoing development.
