A CCTV recording has surfaced showing the intense rooftop explosion that occurred in the Sundarpada area of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on January 27. The blast critically injured four individuals, two of whom later succumbed to their injuries during treatment. The footage captures a sudden ignition of flames emanating from behind water tanks on the rooftop of a residential building, followed by significant smoke rising into the air. The force of the explosion created notable shockwaves felt throughout the vicinity, leading to widespread panic as residents fled their homes after hearing a loud noise.

Possible Cause of the Explosion

According to police reports, the explosion is thought to have taken place while explosives were being manipulated on the rooftop. Four individuals initially received treatment at Capital Hospital before being transferred to a private medical facility. Tragically, days later, a woman and her son were pronounced dead due to complications from their injuries.

Investigation into Illegal Activities

The Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police has named Shahnawaz Malik as the primary suspect in this case. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, focusing on potential illegal bomb-making activities. Preliminary investigations suggest that Malik, along with an associate named Amiya Malik, his mother, and another accomplice, may have been engaged in the production of explosive materials at the location. Gunpowder was reportedly discovered at the scene, adding weight to suspicions regarding illegal manufacturing activities. Officials indicated that the main injured individual had a prior criminal record, suggesting involvement in unlawful operations.

National Investigation Agency Takes Over

Due to the gravity of the incident, the National Investigation Agency has assumed control of the investigation, marking a significant escalation in the matter. Initially, a Special Investigation Team was formed by local law enforcement to probe the situation before the national agency intervened. Investigators are meticulously examining the CCTV footage and gathering forensic evidence to ascertain the exact motives behind the explosion and to identify if there were any further conspiracies at play.
